ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

The Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) is an 85 year-old student-governed and operated, non-profit affordable housing cooperative near the University of California at Berkeley.  Our mission is to provide quality, low-cost, cooperative housing to students who otherwise might not be able to afford a university education.  The BSC houses 1260 students in 17 room-and-board houses and 3 apartment complexes (ranging in size from 17 to 259 students).  We provide numerous leadership opportunities to students, who perform the majority of the day-to-day functions, working alongside a professional staff of 25, to operate the organization.  To learn more about the BSC please visit our website at www.bsc.coop.  

 

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Contracting & Purchasing Agent is responsible for conducting competitive bidding processes, vendor selection, aggregating requisition requests, and placing orders for all goods purchased by the BSC central warehouse, under the direction of the Operations Manager.  Centrally procured goods may include, but are not limited to, various food items, office supplies, maintenance supplies, furniture, supplies for special projects, and/or any good which the BSC achieves an economy of scale when purchasing centrally.  They maintain a requisition database, documentation of all competitive bidding processes, requisition requests, and vendor purchase orders and they ensure this information is readily accessible to BSC staff, house-level managers, and the Board.  The Contracting & Purchasing Agent is also responsible for communicating changes in vendors and product availability to the appropriate department and/or house-level managers, following up with vendors to address discrepancies between items ordered and received and/or damaged goods, and auditing purchasing trends to share with management and the Board of Directors.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least two years college and at least two years of purchasing experience involving a variety of food, supplies, materials, equipment and services.  Two years of store or warehousing experience involving the distribution of food, maintenance, or office supplies is also required, as is previous experience using purchasing and/or inventory management software.  Previous experience with competitive bidding procedures is also necessary.  A combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

Applicants must have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication and customer service skills.  You must have excellent record-keeping/organizational skills and be familiar with proper ordering/financial documentation practices.  You must be able to work independently, establish priorities, and ensure the timely completion of tasks and projects.  You must have the ability to work with a diverse array of people and students in particular.  You must be able to work in a fast-paced office and warehouse environment.  Applicants must also have intermediate skills with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and the ability to quickly learn and effectively use new purchasing/inventory management databases.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This is a full time position with a starting hourly wage of $21.85/hour.  Benefits and other conditions of employment are pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement, which currently provides for a generous benefits package including annual cost-of-living pay increases, annual performance-based raises and bonuses, paid health and dental insurance for employee and dependents, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, paid long-term disability and life insurance, and an employer paid retirement benefits program.
