Part-Time Position Available 




The Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) is an 80 year-old student-governed and operated non-profit affordable housing cooperative near the University of California at Berkeley.  The BSC houses approximately 1280 students in 17 room-and-board houses and 3 apartment complexes. The Webmaster oversees the design, development, and maintenance of the BSC website.  Duties will include, but not be limited to, updating and developing new web content and graphics, training other staff to update content and use the website, guiding the creation and implementation of long-term plans to improve website functionality, diagnosing and repairing any problems with the website or databases, tracking site usage/statistics, ensuring and improving security features, regularly backing up content, and maintaining hosting and third-party relationships on which the functionality of the website depends.  S/he is also responsible for building, improving, and troubleshooting web-based applications.  The Webmaster ensures that the BSC maximizes the functionality of the Google Education Applications and acts as the primary email administrator.  S/he is also responsible for managing and enhancing the BSC’s use of online social media and consistent design standards in order to achieve organizational communications goals.



Applicants must have a college degree and at least three years’ of professional experience as a webmaster, information technology specialist, or comparable position.  S/he must have excellent writing and editing skills; experience with Google Applications; command of HTML, CSS, and other mark-up languages; fluency in one or more web Content Management Systems, such as Joomla or Drupal; the ability to effectively use desktop publishing software such as InDesign or Pagemaker; understanding of cross-browser capability issues, W3C web design standards, accessibility and usability; the ability to troubleshoot problems with web hosting services and leverage hosting service interfaces (such as CPanel) to carry out necessary tasks (e.g. back-ups, restoring previous versions of the site, security enhancements, etc.); and experience with online payment methods and e-commerce, particularly relating to donations.  Previous experience and/or the ability to quickly learn and apply skills with PHP, MySQL, and Javascript is also required.



This is a 20-hour/week job (hours can be worked in a three-five days/week schedule, depending on needs of applicant) with a starting wage of $23.64/hour, with the potential for merit increases and/or bonuses and an annual cost-of-living adjustment. This is an hourly, part-time position without benefits except for paid holiday, sick and vacation. This job begins immediately and is subject to a period of trial employment.
