TEMPORARY MAINTENANCE CREW MEMBER


ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

The Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) is an independent student-owned and operated housing cooperative near the University of California at Berkeley.  The BSC houses 1280 students in 17 room-and-board houses (ranging in size from 17 to 140 students) and 3 apartment complexes.  Students in each unit are expected to do their own minor repairs and projects, relying on members of the Maintenance Crew for guidance, training, and quick emergency response, as well as more significant repairs and improvements.

 

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Maintenance Crew members perform preventative maintenance, repairs, construction and improvement work. They are expected to train student maintenance managers and crews in repair and maintenance techniques (by leading workshops, giving in-house consultations, etc.).  Working from written and oral instructions, they will be expected to perform journey-level work in at least one of the following areas, and be operational in at least two of the following areas: Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry, Heating and Mechanical, or Locksmithing.  They also oversee sub-contractors on large projects, as well as develop basic plans/drawings of work to be done.  Supervision of student workers may be necessary.  They maintain computerized records of work done, and report to management as necessary.  They purchase and deliver materials as needed.   They must be willing to carry a cell phone, and work emergency overtime, as needed.

 

DESIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

In addition to those skills listed above, a Maintenance Crew member must be able to learn new skills quickly.   They should have good interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work well with a diverse group of people.  Basic math skills are necessary as well as basic computer skills.  They must be willing and able to develop familiarity with BSC buildings and policies.

 

ENTRY-LEVEL EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIRED:

  1. Two years of college or equivalent experience working in a college environment.
  2. Four years (full-time equivalent) performing maintenance for residential buildings and/or hands-on trade experience.
  3. Must have own vehicle, a valid Drivers’ License, and a good driving record.
  4. Desire to work with students in a student-controlled environment.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. Ability to perform duties in a normal office environment and at BSC properties, both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
  2. Ability to talk, listen, stoop, kneel, reach, sit, stand, move, walk about construction sites on uneven terrain, crawl and reach in confined spaces, observe and measure physical attributes of properties in various stages of construction, distinguish shades of color, and engage in repetitive motions.
  3. Ability to lift 60 pounds.
  4. Ability to operate a computer keyboard, printer, copier, fax and telephone.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This is a full-time position with a minimum starting wage of $26.03/hour.  Benefits include paid holidays and sick leave.  This position is a temporary position that will last at least through September 2015.
