MAINTENANCE CREW MEMBER


ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

The Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) is an independent student-owned and operated housing cooperative near the University of California at Berkeley.  The BSC houses 1280 students in 17 room-and-board houses (ranging in size from 17 to 149 students) and 3 apartment complexes.  Students in each unit are expected to do their own minor repairs and projects, relying on members of the Maintenance Crew for guidance, training, and quick emergency response, as well as more significant repairs and improvements.

 

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

A Maintenance Crew member performs preventative maintenance, repairs, and capital improvement work at all BSC properties and coordinates with outside vendors brought in to provide services/repairs. S/he is expected to train student Maintenance Managers and crews in repair and maintenance techniques (by leading workshops, giving in-house consultations, etc.).  Working from written and oral instructions, s/he will be expected to perform independent repairs and be operational in at least two of the following areas: Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry, Heating and Mechanical, and/or Locksmithing. Supervision of student workers may be necessary.  S/he maintains computerized records of work done, and reports to management as necessary.  S/he coordinates dump runs and the regular services and repairs for the BSC vehicle fleet. S/he purchases and delivers materials as needed. S/he must be willing to carry a cell phone and respond to requests for emergency overtime, as needed.

 

DESIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

In addition to those skills listed above, a Maintenance Crew Member must be able to learn new skills quickly.   S/he should have good interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work well with a diverse group of people.  Basic math skills are necessary as well as basic computer skills.  S/he must be willing and able to develop familiarity with BSC buildings and policies.

 

ENTRY-LEVEL EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIRED:

1.      Two years of college or equivalent experience working in a college environment.

2.      Two years (full-time equivalent) performing maintenance for residential buildings.

3.      Must have own vehicle, a valid Drivers’ License, and a good driving record.

  1. Desire to work with students in a student-controlled environment.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. Ability to perform duties in a normal office environment and at BSC properties, both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
  2. Ability to talk, listen, stoop, kneel, reach, sit, stand, move, walk about construction sites on uneven terrain, crawl and reach in confined spaces, observe and measure physical attributes of properties in various stages of construction, distinguish shades of color, and engage in repetitive motions.
  3. Ability to lift 60 pounds.
  4. Ability to operate a computer keyboard, printer, copier, fax and telephone.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This is a full-time position with a starting wage of $22.51/hour.  Benefits and other conditions of employment are pursuant to an Employee Association contract, which currently provides for annual cost-of-living adjustments, performance-based raises and/or bonuses, paid health and dental insurance for employee and dependents, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, and paid retirement benefits (after two years).
