 ACCOUNTS PAYABLE BOOKKEEPER

 

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

The Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) is a student-governed and operated nonprofit housing cooperative near the University of California at Berkeley.  The BSC houses 1280 students in 17 room-and-board houses and 3 apartment complexes.

 

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Accounts Payable Bookkeeper oversees the entire accounts payable operation of the organization.  Duties include, but are not limited to, setting up vendor accounts; processing invoices for payment; tracking aging and discounts; processing checks weekly; maintaining invoice and check files; processing bi-weekly payroll, taxes, and benefits reporting; overseeing monthly closings and trial balances; preparing annual W-2 and 1099 reports; preparing for and assisting with annual audits; issuing purchase order cards; documenting the disbursal of petty cash and reimbursements, cross-training with Accounts Receivable to ensure departmental coverage as necessary; and other duties as assigned by the Bookkeeping/Office Supervisor.  This position supervises student staff members and volunteers.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Qualified applicants must have two years of college and at least two years of bookkeeping experience, including some supervisory experience.  We are looking for someone who has a working knowledge of both A/P & A/R Bookkeeping.  You must be able to type 35 wpm and use ten-key calculator quickly and accurately.  You must be able to quickly learn detailed information. You must have effective communication and interpersonal skills.  You must be able to work in a hectic office environment.  You must have strong computer skills and experience with computerized bookkeeping procedures.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Work is performed in a normal office environment and requires the ability to operate a computer keyboard, 10-key calculator, and engage in repetitive motions.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This is a full time position with an hourly starting wage of $20.02.  Benefits and other conditions of employment are pursuant to an Employee Association contract, which currently provides for annual cost-of-living adjustments, performance-based raises and/or bonuses, paid health and dental insurance for employee and dependents, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, and paid retirement benefits (after two years).
