Member Advocate

Available Fall 2015:

Member Advocate

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the Member Resources Supervisor, the Member Advocate (MA) represents members who are respondents in Conduct Committee cases or are seeking an administrative remedy from the Administrative Committee and prepares for and attends committee hearings.  The MA also attends the screening committee meetings held to determine whether a case should be sent to the Administrative or the Conduct Committee and represents members in appeals of decisions by the Administrative or the Conduct Committee and in house-level termination cases.   The MA engages in extensive outreach to the membership, makes a personal cell phone number available to the membership, holds regular office hours, and schedules meetings with members when advice is requested or a case is referred.  The MA helps the member (1) understand the provisions of the BSC Member Contract, Administrative Code or Conduct Code or other BSC policy which may affect the outcome of their case and (2) assemble the facts that support the member’s position in the case.  The MA may recommend cases for alternative dispute resolution at the central level or the house level.  The Member Advocate maintains the confidentiality of the dispute, the parties’ and witnesses’ identities, the investigation report and any other information about the case.

REQUIREMENTS:  Applicants must be eligible BSC members with strong organizational skills, including ability to balance multiple, competing priorities and cases under strict deadlines.  Applicants must have previous experience conducting interviews and gathering facts about a dispute as well as handling sensitive and confidential information.  They must have excellent oral advocacy skills and thorough knowledge of the BSC Member Contract and administrative and conduct policies and procedures.  Additionally, they must have an understanding of and demonstrated ability to maintain strong professional boundaries when contacted about a pending or completed investigation.

HOURS/PAY:  This is an 11 hour/week position, compensated with rent credit at the workshift rate (currently $13.00/hour) for six hours/week and fulfilling your five hour/week workshift requirement. Apartment dwellers and summer residents will receive an additional rent credit stipend for the workshift hours (at the workshift rate), as this job does not replace the workshift requirement in these instances.  This position starts in the Summer and can be continued in the Fall and Spring.  If, for any reason, the position is not filled until after the beginning of the contract period , the stipend will be prorated.  You cannot be a member of the Board of Directors and hold a Central Level position.
