ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

The Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) is an 84 year-old student-governed and operated non-profit affordable housing cooperative near the University of California at Berkeley.  The BSC houses 1280 students in 17 room-and-board houses and 3 apartment complexes (ranging in size from 17 to 259 students).  Students in each unit are expected to order, cook, and manage their own food, supplies, and waste reduction services, relying on Central Food & Supplies staff for guidance, training on food/waste reduction service management, sanitation, and safety, collective food/furniture/supplies purchasing, warehousing, and delivery, liaising with UC/City officials and vendors, and other problem-solving and support as needed.  To learn more about the BSC please visit our website at www.bsc.coop.  


GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Assistant Central Food and Supplies (CFS) Supervisor provides assistance to the CFS Supervisor in ensuring that the BSC’s centralized warehousing operations run efficiently.  This entails receiving and inspecting food, furniture, and supplies deliveries, training and supervising part-time student workers, taking inventories, assisting with the implementation of loss-prevention measures, providing office coverage, and other warehousing-related tasks.

The Assistant CFS Supervisor is also responsible for supporting student Kitchen and Waste Reduction Managers at individual BSC properties in providing quality food services at the house-level and ensuring that refuse/recycling services run smoothly.  They are responsible for training Kitchen and Waste Reduction Managers, providing on-going support, and facilitating communication between the houses and central-level staff.  They assist the Operations Assistant and house-level managers in correcting habitability, food safety/sanitation, and pest control issues related to food service.  They also assist with the repair and replacement of small kitchen appliances/equipment and other duties, as assigned by the CFS Supervisor.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least two years college and previous supervisory, training, and food service experience.  Previous experience as a Kitchen Manager (either in the BSC or elsewhere) and/or warehousing and experience working with students is preferred.

Applicants must have excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.  You must be able to work independently, establish priorities, and ensure the timely completion of tasks and projects.  You must be able to analyze systems and suggest/implement improvements.  You must have the ability to work with a diverse array of people and students in particular.  Tact, firmness, and a willingness to enforce BSC policy, safety, and habitability standards are required.  You must be able to learn quickly and work in a fast-paced office and warehouse environment.  Applicants must also have intermediate skills with Microsoft Office, databases, the ability to type 50 WPM, and be able to use a 10-key calculator quickly and accurately.  If hired, you must pass and maintain a Food Service Manager and Proctor/Trainer Certification.   

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to work in a normal office environment, sit or stand for prolonged periods, operate a computer keyboard, 10-key calculator, printer, copier, fax, and telephone, and engage in repetitive motions.
  2. Ability to talk, listen, stoop, kneel, reach, sit, stand, move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects/materials, walk about warehouse/loading dock areas and on uneven terrain, observe and measure physical attributes of products and goods, and distinguish shades of color.
  3. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This is a full-time position with an hourly starting wage of $22.46/hour.  Benefits and other conditions of employment are pursuant to a union contract, which currently provides for annual cost-of-living increases, annual performance-based raises and/or bonuses, paid health and dental insurance for employees and dependents, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, long-term disability and life insurance, and a generous retirement benefits program.
