Year 5's

In Year 5 we venture out into stringed instruments and start to learn the ukulele.

First chord is C as it is so easy and then we add in F and G. Am is a really easy and useful chord to fit in with these others as well.

Students start by opting to play only one chord during a piece of music so that initially there might be two or three groups each playing only one chord during a piece of music. Very quickly they find they can manage two, then three chords and pretty soon the entire piece is mastered. Listening to the music to hear the changes in sound is an important part of learning every piece of music.

Students are encouraged to use the ukuleles in The STudio whenever they like and they can borrow them to take them home and practise any time overnight or for the weekend. There is nothing like practice to embed a skill!

Once these chords are mastered on the ukulele, we then transfer them to tuned percussion and put both strings and xylophone together to play pieces.

In Dance Year 5 students start to learn a little more about choreography as well as continuing to investigate the various purposes and types of dance as they learn different routines. Correct dance terminology will be used and there will be an increased focus on sharing dance ideas in a performance setting.

Drama for Year 5 students also employs some additional terminology as they learn to use all the drama techniques to convey their dramatic ideas. They will also be learning some of the simplest drama conventions and be introduced to improvisation.
