TA and Course Designer Roles & Permissions

Teaching Assistants for your course have special roles and permissions on Canvas as either TAs or Course Designers. TAs must be graduate students and Course Designers can be either undergraduate or graduate students. You can add users to your Canvas site.

TAs and Course Designers share the following permissions:
  • Add, edit, and delete pages
  • Add, edit, and delete course files
  • Post to discussions
  • Post to announcements
  • View pages for all student groups
  • Create a web conference
  • Add, edit, and delete assignments and quizzes
  • Add, edit, and delete events in the course calendar
TAs have the following additional permissions:
  • Delete or edit others' discussion posts
  • Lock discussions
  • View and comment on all student submissions
  • Send messages to course members
  • Edit grades
  • View a list of all users
  • View all grades
  • Create, edit, and delete groups
Course Designers are not permitted to do any of the above.

TAs, Course Designers, and Teachers are not permitted to add or remove students to or from the course.
