The Basics

The User Dashboard is the main page on Canvas that consolidates important information from all of your courses and helps you navigate the site. It allows you to do the following:

  • View recent announcements, assignments, discussions, and other changes to your courses, with quick links that allow you to access these new developments, through the Recent Activity feed located in the center of the page.
  • Navigate to the home page for any of your courses through the drop-down menu labeled Courses directly above the Recent Activity feed.
  • Navigate to a page displaying impending assignments for all courses through the Assignments link located at the top of the page to the right of the Courses link. Learn how to submit assignments here.
  • Navigate to a page listing your grades for all of your courses through the Grades link located at the top of the page to the right of the Assignments link. Learn how to predict your final grades here.
  • Navigate to a page displaying your calendar, which features assignments, assessments, and events for all of your courses as well as your personal calendar, through the Calendar link located at the top of the page to the right of the Grades link. Learn how to use the Calendar here.
  • View impending assignments, assessments, and events, with links so you can read about them in further detail, under the Coming Up listing on the right side of the page.
  • View recent feedback from instructors and peers, including grades, under the Recent Feedback listing on the right side of the page under theComing Up listing.
  • Navigate to your profile by clicking either on your name or the link labeled Settings in the upper right-hand corner of the page. Learn how to edit your profile here.
  • Navigate to Conversations by clicking on the link labeled Inbox in the upper right-hand corner of the page. Learn to send messages in Conversations here.
  • Log out of Canvas by clicking on the link labeled Logout in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
  • Report a problem or access user guides for Canvas by clicking on the link labeled Help in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

Navigating Courses
You can access the home page for any of your courses through the drop-down menu labeled Courses directly above the Recent Activity feed on the User Dashboard.
The home page, labeled Home in the left-hand sidebar, lists important information pertaining to the course.
The Course Navigation tool on the left side of the page displays a list of links, including some but not necessarily all of the following:

Home directs you to the course's home page.
Syllabus directs you to the course syllabus.
Outcomes directs you to a page that lists the most important skills and activities in the course and how your learning matches up with your instructor's proposed goals.
Announcements directs you to a feed of all of the announcements that have been posted about your course.
Collaborations directs you to a page that allows you to work on collaborative documents with other students through document-sharing services EtherPad and Google Docs.
Assignments directs you to a list of assignments — including graded discussions, assignments, and quizzes — your instructor has added for you to complete. Learn how to submit assignments here.
Discussions directs you to a message board where you can start or comment on discussion topics shared with the rest of your class.
Quizzes directs you to a page containing all of the quizzes and surveys your professor has added for you to complete.
Pages directs you to a list of pages that your instructor has made for your course, often including links to content pages or other supplementary material.
People directs you to a listing of other students in the course, as well as your instructor and Teaching Assistants. This page also displays student groups and allows you to create new groups. Click here to learn how to create groups.
Chat directs you to a chatroom application that allows you interact with other students, as well as your instructor and Teaching Assistants, in real time. View this video to learn how to use Chat.
Grades directs you to a list of your grades on different assignments and your total grade in the course. Click here to learn how to predict your grades.
Files directs you to a list of files posted by your instructor and available for download. Click here to learn how to access course files.
Modules directs you to a set of lists of links to assignments, quizzes, files, content pages, discussion topics, and other material organized under topic headings.
Conferences directs you to a web conference application that allows you to use a webcam and microphone to interact with other students, as well as your instructor and Teaching Assistants, in real time.

The right sidebar of the page will display the following:


    The To Do listing heads links to quizzes, assignments, and other items to be
    completed.


    The Recent Changes listing heads links to pages that have been modified by 
    your instructors or peers.



    The Pages listing heads links to pages created by your instructor for the course.


    The Recent Feedback listing heads links to recent feedback from instructors 
    and peers, including grades.
