Sending Messages

You can send messages to students on Canvas like you would in an email account. This is a good way to make sure that your important messages about your course don’t get mixed up with your students’ personal emails.

  • Log into Canvas.
  • Select Inbox from the upper right-hand corner of the screen to navigate to Conversations.

The left side of the screen will display messages in your inbox, and you can send a new message on the right side of the screen.

  • Enter the name of an individual student, group, or course, in the To: to send them a message.
  • Select the contacts icon to view a list of everyone in your courses whom you can message.
  • Enter the text of the message.
  • Choose whether to attach a file or record or upload an audio or video comment to attach media to your message.
  • Click the Send button when you finish.
  • Select a message from the left side of the screen to read it.
  • Star a message to designate it as important.
  • Select the gear icon next to a message for more options for how to organize it.
  • Use the dropdown menu labeled Inbox to select what type of messages you would like to view.
  • Enter a name, group, or course in the Filter field to search for conversations with a certain individual or set of individuals.
  • Select the writing icon to begin to compose a new message.
