Managing Course Files

Organizing Files

You can store files in Canvas to use in your courses.

  • Log into Canvas.
  • Select a course from the dropdown menu.
  • Select Files from the left-hand sidebar.

All of your files for your course are stored in "Files".

  • You can add folders to organize your course files based on topic or theme.
  • You should lock any file or folder to limit student access.
  • You can choose whether to allow students to access the file or folder if and only if you include it in another part of your course.
  • You can choose whether to leave the file locked until you change its status or to schedule a date for the lock to begin or end.
  • You can upload files from your computer individually to your main course folder or to any other folder.
  • You can upload a zipped collection of files downloaded from another course site.
  • You can download your files on Canvas as a zipped collection of files.

Once you upload a file to your course files, it is easily accessible to include in any other course content.
When you use the Rich Content Editor tool, the Files tab on the right will give you access to all of the files you have uploaded for your course.

Adding Files

The Rich Content Editor tool on Canvas allows you to upload files directly to pages, announcements, assignments, and your syllabus. Select ‘File’ from the tab on the right side of the screen and select ‘Upload a new file.’ Select the ‘Choose File’ button that appears below, which will allow you to select a file from your desktop to directly upload.

You can upload a file with a word or phrase in the editing field highlighted, so that once the page is published students can select the word — which will now be blue to signify that it is a link — to open the file. If you do not have a word or phrase in the editing field highlighted when you upload the file to the page, the file will appear as it exists on your desktop (e.g. cake.jpg, catcher.doc).

Alternatively, you can create an archive of all files that you will use for your class. Select ‘Files’ from the sidebar on the left side of the screen.

Select ‘Add Folder’ on the right portion of the screen to create folders to organize course content.

Select the ‘Add Files’ button to upload files from your desktop into the folder. Students will now be able to access these files on the ‘File’ page.

Now when you are adding files to a page using the Rich Content Editor, you will not need to upload the files from the desktop again. When you select the ‘Files’ tab on the right, navigate through your course files and select those you wish to upload to the page.
