Conducting a Web Conference

Using Canvas, you can conduct real-time conferences with audio, video, presentation, and chat capabilities.

  • Log into Canvas.
  • Select a course from the dropdown menu.
  • Select Conference from the left-hand sidebar.
  • Click the Start it now button corresponding to the conference you have made. You will be redirected to a BigBlueButton conference site. If a pop-up window appears, click Allow to allow the site to use your camera and microphone for the purpose of this conference.
  • Select the icons in the upper left-hand corner to begin broadcasting audio, video, or a view of your desktop.

The conference site organizes its various functions and features into moveable, collapsible windows.

  • The Users window provides a list of those participating in the conference.
  • When another participant shares video, it will stream in a separate window with the participant's name at the top.
  • When another participant shares audio, that participant's name will appear in the Listeners window.
  • The Chat window can be used to chat with the entire conference or to privately chat with a specific participant.
  • Click the Upload Presentation button at the bottom of the Presentation window to upload a slideshow. You can add drawings and text to your presentation using the toolbar in the Presentation window.

Using different combinations of these audio and video capabilities, you can effectively organize, create, and facilitate your Canvas web conference. Click Log Out when you are finished conferencing to return to your Canvas course.
