Social Studies Excellence: The Choices Approach
Learning Module

Goal of Learning Module 
This learning module is designed for current and future social studies teachers. It introduces the Choices Program's materials and approach to teaching about contested international issues as a means for delivering excellence in social studies.

Learning Module Units 
  1. The Social Studies Teaching Profession
    Unit One is designed for student teachers and those who are new to the social studies profession. Teachers will be introduced to selected organizations and themes, such as the National Council for Social Studies, Common Core and the Civic Mission of Schools.

  2. An Introduction to the Choices Program and its Resources
    Unit Two provides an overview of the Choices Program and all of its resources. If you are new to Choices and can only complete one unit in this Learning Module, this is the one to choose.

  3. A Student-Centered Approach to Teaching Current Issues
    Unit Three provides teachers with an in depth look at our Current Issues series, with additional attention focused on the Options Role Play and deliberative dialogue.

  4. Historical Inquiry and Historical Turning Points
    Unit Four introduces Choices' Historical Turning Points series, and provides ways to use the units to introduce historical thinking skills and historical inquiry.

  5. Adaptations and a Life Long Professional Development Plan
    Unit Five provides teacher-tested methods of adapting Choices materials to different classroom settings, and provides suggestions of organizations that provide excellent professional development.
           Unit Six explores geography lessons found in Choices units and provides 
           suggestions and tips for using Choices in the geography classroom.
