What's Happening in the Classroom

Welcome to Seventh Grade Language Arts!

We have finished The Breadwinner! As a result, students will be starting an argumentative essay on the novel. We will be identifying different themes in class, finding evidence to support those themes, and then, independently, students will choose one of those themes to form a thesis statement on. Upon doing so, we will take a step-by-step approach to formulating an argumentative paper, looking at the individual components that, weaved together, form an airtight paper.

Once students finish with this essay, we will be writing one more paper to close out our argumentative unit; for this assignment, students will learn the value of conducting independent research, formulating a thesis based on a topic they are interested in, and finding three credible sources to back it up. We will go over how to identify author's bias, evaluate a website's credibility, and introduce counter-claims within our writing.

Then, we will be moving into our biography unit, where students will conduct research on historical figures and write biographical reports using multiple credible sources. Students will also be working on a book report on an approved biography or autobiography (the subject of this text may be the same person they write their report on).

We are also more than halfway through our Greek and Latin roots unit. Students have, at this point, studied over 90 roots, prefixes, and suffixes, and by the end of the unit will have reached over 100! Upon reaching this monumental point, we will have a test that assesses their overall acquisition of these terms, both through memorization as well as application.

We also have use of a new program called Reading Plus! We will be using the program at least once a week to encourage effective reading habits and bolster vocabulary acquisition. Students are also encouraged to use the program at home (on either a computer or tablet). They should all have their login information written down or memorized at this point.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you, and have a great day!
