Brookfield Community,

As many of you are aware, at its regular meeting on August 15, 2018, the Board of Education unanimously approved the plan to build a new Pre-K – 5 school on the Huckleberry Hill property as presented by the Strategic Facilities Steering Committee.

In accordance with the Town Charter, the next step for the BOE was to move the project to the Board of Selectmen to be formally assigned to the Town’s Municipal Building Committee (MBC) for further development.  At its September 4th meeting, the Board of Selectmen voted to authorize the MBC to oversee and supervise the new school project.

The MBC’s role is to provide primary leadership for the project, establishing goals & timelines and supervising the overall process. At its September 18, 2018 regular meeting the MBC established an Ad Hoc Subcommittee to further develop the new school project. The Subcommittee consists of the Chairs of the Boards of Education, Finance and Selectmen, as well other key stakeholders necessary to support quality project development. Members include Representative Harding, Treasure Lucas, Superintendent Barile, and an individual with construction management experience yet to be selected.

A key element of this Ad Hoc Subcommittee’s role will be communication with the public. Colette Sturm, BOE Chair and Dr. Barile, Superintendent of Schools, will speak on behalf of the new school project to answer questions, post updates, and lead public engagement efforts.

The new school project will be presented to a joint meeting of the Board of Selectman and Board of Finance on October 16th at Brookfield High School. The project’s benefits, scope and costs will be addressed.  The public will have the opportunity to provide input and ask questions following the presentation, which will be held in the high school auditorium in order to accommodate a large audience.  After this meeting, a dedicated email will be established for you to submit questions and suggestions. Your concerns and the Subcommittee’s responses will be published in a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) posting. At this time of Subcommittee transition, please take the time to review project information that has been developed and archived for the past two years at https://sites.google.com/a/brookfieldps.org/bpssfc/  and on the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/bpsnewschoolproject

We look forward to seeing you on October 16th as we continue to engage in this exciting time in Brookfield.
