Our Mission is to instill in our students the confidence and desire to achieve their goals with a positive foundation in education to last a lifetime. Brookfield Academy graduates are prepared for the challenges of top middle and high school programs, possessing higher-order thinking skills and work habits resulting from proven Montessori methodology which approaches each child as an individual learner.
The Brookfield Academy West Bloomfield Campus, built in August 1977 was founded by its owners and a group of dedicated parents who insisted on the benefits of a sound, early and individualized educational program for their children. We address sequential steps in academic growth through careful assessment, allowing children to move ahead at their own pace within a carefully planned and prepared peaceful environment; fostering a sense of responsibility and independence in every child. We strive to offer a broad, meaningful education encompassing the mind, culture, emotions, social interactions and practical life skills of each student.
Children's House Program(ages 3 to 6 years)
In this mixed-age primary classroom, the Montessori hands-on learning approach includes the major curriculum area: language, mathematics, sensorial, practical life, cultural studies, science, geography, history, and art. The Children's House program fosters autonomy in children by instilling an "I can do it" attitude, which gives the child a good feeling about school and builds independence. We ensure that each building block of academic foundation is mastered by the child. Using careful observation, the teacher takes her cues from the child to determine when formal reading and math instruction should begin and when to move tot he next level.
Elementary Program (ages 6 to 9 and 9 to 12)
The Montessori elementary programs focus on decision-making, problem-solving, and time management within the context of academics. Mathematics, geometry, science, language arts, history, and geography form the core curriculum. A Montessori elementary education draws upon the independence of the student, encouraging self-directed study and independent research while developing skill sand knowledge through individual instruction and small-group lessons. Students learn abstract concepts by working with concrete material. The program meets or exceeds all state standards. Teachers combine high expectations for children with hands-on, challenging, and engaging materials in an environment designed to foster academic and social skills.
Special Classes in Music, Spanish, and Physical Education are included in our preprimary curriculum. In the elementary programs Art, Music, Band, Spanish, Computer and Physical Education are taught by specialists during the school day.
