About Bug

Bronco Urban Gardens (BUG)

came to fruition out of a partnership between Santa Clara University's (SCU) Environmental Studies Institute and the Silicon Valley HealthCorps in the Fall of 2009. BUG is a new environmental justice initiative lead by SCU's Environmental Studies Institute. The goal of the program is to increase community food security, sustainability and environmental literacy in Santa Clara Country through the co-creation and technical support of urban gardens and garden education programs.

  1. Provide urban agricultural technical support and educational program assistance to improve the food security, health and environmental literacy of underserved schools and marginalized communities in Santa Clara County
  2. Ensure the long-term viability of Santa Clara County school and community gardens by providing free teacher trainings as well as garden classroom education and volunteer support
  3. Train a new generation of sustainable agriculture and food system educators and leaders
  4. Enhance urban sustainability and build community by helping communities to produce their own healthy food and by reconnecting people with natural systems and with each other
