The sixth grade ELA program aligns with the New York State Common core Standards. The reading component of this course will incorporate varying genres including: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, newspapers, magazines, short stories, myths, and fairy tales. We will focus on reading strategies to build fluency and comprehension.

The writing component incorporates paragraphs, stories, research, and essays. Types of writing will include argument, informative/explanatory, and narrative writing. Grammar lessons will focus and mechanics and usage.

Students will develop skills in problem solving, communication, cooperation, negotiation, and decision making. The goal of this course is to encourage each student to turn to reading and writing as important, necessary, and enjoyable parts of their daily lives.
