BRIDGEPORT — Shaun Mitchell, with the district just six years as a Central High SchoolEnglish and drama teacher, has something else to add to his resume.
He is Bridgeport’s 2016 Teacher of the Year, a distinction that will allow him to compete for the statetitle. The state winner gets to compete for the national title.
More than 100 districts name teachers of the year in Connecticut. From those, about a dozen or so areselected as finalists. Typically, the winner is named before December.
Two years ago, Mitchell was a recipient of the Margaret and Theodore Beard Award, a cash prize of$25,000 that is given to two Bridgeport teachers deemed to be exceptional. He also sits on thesuperintendent’s advisory council, was master of ceremony’s at Central High Schools 2015graduation and even moderated the district’s spelling bee this year.
In his application Mitchell defended his profession and said he fights for the rights of his studentsevery day.
“Complacency in teachers is never a good thing for schools. As a young teacher I look forward to improving,” said Shaun Mitchell.
Interim Schools Superintendent Fran Rabinowitz called him truly a champion of students and awonderful team player.
