Brandeis University is using Google Apps Education Edition, a suite of free online productivity tools for email, calendaring, and collaborative document authoring. The tools in Google Apps are not installed on your computer. They are provided over the Internet and accessed primarily through a Web browser such as Firefox; as a result, they are available on any computer with Internet access and do not depend on the Brandeis computing infrastructure.

The University's Administrative Resource Review Committee (ARRC) recommended the switch to Gmail as a cost-saving measure.
