Welcome to Room 209

Mrs. D'Elia introduced PGRoom209 to a new audiobook app, Tales2Go, today during LTC.  Thanks to the Pine Glen PTO, students will have access to the entire audiobook library for the next year, straight through 6th grade!  Students can download the app on their Android, iOS, or desktop devices and start listening today.  Sections of books can also be downloaded for listening off-line, a great way to pass the time on those long summer vacation rides in the car.

Brainhive is another app that will remain active for the students over the summer, giving students access to digital books on Pine Glen's subscription.

Check back for more summer reading suggestions. (Hint: The new MCBA list has been released!)

MSMS Visit

Visiting Marshall Simonds

Today, we boarded the bus to Marshall Simonds Middle School, where most of our 5th graders will be headed in September (a couple of our students will be moving out of district this summer).  Students heard a little from Mr. Connors about what to expect as incoming 6th graders and were entertained by the Choral Union, Select Chorus, and Evolution, along with a selection of instrumental groups and soloists.  You can see the MSMS post here.

Tonight, it's time for families to learn about this next step in their students' lives.  Please join Mr. Connors and Ms. Abati at Marshall Simonds at 7:00 tonight (6/3) for an information session about what to expect next year.

Summer Math

posted May 22, 2014, 6:07 AM by Diana Marcus

This summer, TenMarks is offering their Summer Math program FREE to families (usually $39.95)!  TenMarks is the program used by students in Room 209 Math to extend our learning and to review material previously covered in class.

Just as an athlete needs to stay in shape during the off season, students need to continue using their Math skills over the summer in order to transition smoothly into the new school year.  TenMarks creates a personalized program for each student, based on an initial assessment, and provides feedback on progress to both students and parents.

If you would like to learn more or sign your student up for the Summer Math Program, you can check them out here.

EOY Activities

The end of the school year is a busy and exciting time for our fifth graders.

Here are some of the important events and dates.

We will again participate in a field test for this new student assessment.

Math: Tuesday, May 20th

ELA: Friday, May 23rd

Friday, May 30th

We are looking forward to this fun-filled, daylong event and we are hoping for good weather!   Permission slips will be sent home next week.

Important:  Please note the times for this trip.  The bus will leave Cedardale at approximately 1:30.  Depending on traffic, we hope to be back at Pine Glen at 2:30.

Since we arrive back at Pine Glen after dismissal time, it is important that we know how your child will be getting home on that day.  Please fill out the permission slip and return it as soon as possible.

Chaperones are welcome on this trip.  You must provide your own transportation to Groveland, MA and have a completed CORI on file with the office.   The chaperone rate is  $6.00.

Thank you to the PTO for helping to cover some of the cost for this field trip.

Cedardale is an end of year tradition that students look forward to, and it is usually a question asked on the first day of school, when would we go to Cedardale? Our students have been reminded that this truly is a privilege.  earned through hard work and excellent behavior.  A privilege that, unfortunately, can be lost as a consequence to inappropriate behavior.

Visit to the Middle School

Tuesday, June 3rd

Students will take a bus from Pine Glen to Marshall Simonds Middle School. There will be an assembly in the auditorium, a brief tour, and a snack before returning to Pine Glen.

Grade 5 parents will be invited to a parent orientation program in the middle school auditorium on Tuesday, June 3 at 7:00p.m.  Invitations to all fifth grade parents will be sent from the Middle School (not Pine Glen.)

Moving up Ceremony

Monday, June 23rd 9:00

New this year!  We will be holding our Moving up Ceremony during the school day.  We realize that June is a busy time for families and that students have not been able to participate in the past due to evening commitments. A morning ceremony will ensure that all students will be able to participate and will eliminate families having to choose between activities.  As always, parents are invited to the short ceremony in which students receive a moving up certificate.  Later that day students will receive their fifth grade yearbook and will be given time to have classmates sign their books.

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odessy Hiding in the Light

Many parents may have memories of Carl Sagan and his incredible ability to make the complexities of the universe accessible for non-scientists.  Well, Cosmos is back again, hosted by one of my personal favorites, Neil deGrasse Tyson.  The most recent episode, Hiding in the Light*, can be found here for a short while.  The episode focuses (no pun intended) on the nature of light, our current science topic.  While a few portions may go beyond what our students are learning, they should be able to see quite a few of the topics we've explored in class reinforced throughout the show.  This is a great opportunity to watch with your child and discuss what they are learning in school.

Push Up Challenge

Push-Up Challenge

Mrs. Nicholas has challenged our students to do 30 push-ups a day for the next 30 days!  Students, parents, and other family members can use the #Spartan30 website to join in the challenge.

According to the website, "Spartan30 Challenges are meant to be fun and scalable.  Push-ups are a great body weight exercise that offers a tons of options on how to do them...  your skill level [is] doesn't matter, what matters is that you do 30 a day for 30 days.  Invite friends, follow along on the Facebook event page and most importantly have fun!"

Mrs. Nicholas reminded us that we don't need to do 30 all at once.  Break the 30 up into smaller numbers to do throughout the day.  Just get to 30 by the end of each day and you'll be going strong by the end of the month!

Birds of Prey

Bird of Prey Nest Cams

Ms. Pavlicek sent us links so that we can check out birds of prey online via nest cams.  Two are currently active and the red-tailed hawk cam will go live once breeding season begins for them.  Unfortunately, there are advertisements on some of these when you first land on these pages, but they are still worth the watch!

Microscope Fun!

posted Jan 22, 2014, 6:44 AM by Diana Marcus

It all started when we discovered that 40% of our homeroom class was absent today.  We didn't want to finish our science lesson on the interaction of waves without our classmates.  Meanwhile, Miss Pavlicek stopped by with a friendly bird who, in the process of preening himself on Ms. Marcus' arm, left us a piece of down.  (Just like in your big, puffy coat.)

We decided to pull out the magnifiers and microscopes to take a closer look at that piece of down.  When you give a 5th grader something to look at through a microscope, they want more, more, more!  We looked at camellia leaves, honeybee wings, bitterweed stem, cloth fibers, plankton eggs and more!

Before we knew it, we were comparing plant, animal, insect and textile samples.  We also began experimenting with how we could record what we saw with our iPads.  It's almost impossible to keep an iPad still enough to capture a picture with the camera down the neck of the microscope.  Then, a few of us tried using the video camera and grabbing a frame from the video.  Success!
