Curriculum & Assessment

Curriculum/Assessment/Instruction
The district endeavors to have written, taught, and assessed curricula which meet or exceed the Oklahoma Academic Standards.

Curricular development and implementation is directed by Dianne Martinez, the Executive Director of Elementary & Middle Schools, and Jason Langham, the Executive Director of Special Services & High School. They are both assisted by LaDonna Chancellor, who coordinates the secondary department chairs across grades 6-12, and Laura Salzyn, who handles student assessment. There is an online listing of elementary coordinators and secondary department chairs.

Core Curricula
A LiveBinders project to provide online access to core curricula is under development.

Curriculum Assessments

The district uses common core curriculum assessments to improve both its vertical and horizontal alignment and help with targeted remediation.

Elementary Assessments

The elementary schools are using STAR Reading & Math for curriculum assessments.

STAR Reading determines the reading level of each student.  A quick assessment with immediate assessment results, STAR Reading allows teachers to measure individual and class growth. This assessment allows teachers to do the following:
  • Assess students' reading levels in less than 10 minutes.
  • Receive accurate, reliable, norm-referenced reading scores including grade equivalents, percentile ranks, and normal curve equivalents.
  • Determine the appropriate level of challenge for each student to personalize practice and individualize instruction.
  • Predict results on high-stakes, standardized tests, including ITBS, CAT, SAT, and TerraNova.
  • Track growth in student reading achievement longitudinally, facilitating the kind of growth analysis recommended by state and federal organizations.
STAR Math determines the math level of each student.  A quick assessment with immediate assessment results, STAR Math allows teachers to measure individual and class growth. This assessment allows teachers to do the following:
  • Assess students' math levels in less than 15 minutes.
  • Receive accurate, reliable, norm-referenced math scores including grade equivalents, percentile ranks, and normal curve equivalents.
  • Determine the appropriate level of challenge for each student to personalize practice and individualize instruction.
  • Predict results on state and national standardized tests including ITBS, CAT, and TerraNova.
  • Track growth in student math achievement longitudinally, facilitating the kind of growth analysis recommended by state and federal organizations.

Secondary Assessments

Assessments Chart
In 2017-2018 there will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarter assessments for middle school core subjects taught by more than one teacher. For high school core subjects taught by more than one teacher there will be 1st and 3rd quarter assessments, while the semester test will serve as a 2nd quarter assessment.
The middle school English courses will pilot use of STAR Reading assessments in 2017-2018, with supplemental assessments to address other aspects of the Oklahoma Academic Standards.

Canvas & Paperscorer
The district will use the Canvas Learning Management System to conduct all other secondary curriculum assessments. Student Chromebooks will be used in grade 9 while the Paperscorer add-in for Canvas will be used in the other grades to create and scan bubbled answer sheets.

Since high school teachers are currently more familiar with Canvas, they will set up their own common assessments in Canvas for each quarter and, in grades 10-12, use the Paperscorer add-in.

The district will setup the middle school core assessments in Canvas/Paperscorer for those teachers, who will then scan in the Paperscorer answer sheets and interpret the results in Canvas.
