Academic Year Calendar Updates

The school board has approved academic year calendars for 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 that follow the pattern of the current 2016-2017 calendar.
For the 2016-2017 academic year, construction delays on the massive renovations at Central Middle School led to an amended school calendar that started a week later in August and eliminated built-in inclement weather days. The district had its first inclement weather day for this academic year on Friday, January 13, 2017 due to the probability of icy conditions.

Students will NOT make-up that lost day of instruction. There will now be 175 instead of 176 instructional days in this academic year. The same procedure applies for future inclement weather days. The district will still meet state requirements for graduation because we exceed the minimum number of minutes of instruction by enough to excuse the equivalent of 12 school days.

Teachers and other certified employees on 181-day contracts will not suffer a loss of pay because they WILL make-up any missed days via mandatory inservice days after the usual May non-instructional work day. If there are no additional inclement weather days, the usual non-instructional work day to close out class obligations will be on Friday, May 26, 2017, which is also the day of the Commencement ceremony at the high school. On Tuesday, May 30, 2017 (after the Memorial Day holiday), teachers and other certified employess on 181-day contracts will return to school for inservice training.

In a survey open to all district employees, over 3/4 of the 359 respondents favored keeping this revised calendar system for the next two academic years. 2/3 of respondents favored keeping the full week off at Thanksgiving that was new to the district in 2016, keeping Martin Luther King Day as an inservice day, and having Good Friday as a non-school day.

On Monday, January 16, 2017 the Bartlesville Board of Education adopted a revised academic year calendar for 2017-2018 and adopted an academic year calendar for 2018-2019 that reflect these priorities.
