Gary Layman, a science teacher at Bartlesville High School, has been named a Bartlesville Public School District Teacher of the Month by Arvest Bank and Oakley Chevrolet Buick. In recognition of this honor, Mr. Layman was presented a plaque and a $300 check by Annah Fischer, Arvest Bank Marketing Manager, and David Oakley Jr., owner of Oakley Chevrolet Buick.

Mr. Layman has 27 years of experience teaching science. He has spent 20 of those years at Bartlesville Mid-High and now Bartlesville High School. He is currently teaching Honors Chemistry I and has previously taught Biology I, Environmental Science, and Active Chemistry for the district. Mr. Layman also now serves as the chair of the district’s Science Department and as the Treasurer of the Education/Career Development Committee, which is a funding mechanism for the annual Energy Days program for area fifth grade students and supports professional development for area science teachers. He is also a member of the National Education Association, Oklahoma Education Association, Bartlesville Education Association, and National Science Teachers Association.

Mr. Layman’s parents were career teachers. That and his involvement in 4-H influenced his decision to pursue teaching. Growing up in a small school district, Layman witnessed the integral role teachers had in both the school and the community at large. Mr. Layman and his sister spent many of their formative years at school and community events. He later became heavily involved with 4-H, which has a focus on “learning by doing” and sharing your knowledge with others through demonstrations, speeches, and workshops. It was through these experiences that he became aware he loved to learn and share his knowledge with others.

Mr. Layman believes teachers should provide opportunities for students to explore their world and discover the relationships among their experiences in order to construct a deep and meaningful understanding of events and phenomena around them. “An outstanding teacher,” he believes, “is one who can help each student develop into a lifelong learner.”

Mr. Layman is known for regularly attending non-academic student events. “My students need to know that I value their accomplishments and care about their non-academic interests... Students appreciate seeing teachers at their events, and it helps me appreciate the amount of time and effort students spend in their non-academic pursuits.”

Bartlesville Public Schools is proud to join Arvest Bank and Oakley Chevrolet Buick in honoring Gary Layman as a Bartlesville Teacher of the Month.
