2018 6A State Girls Swim Champions

The Lady Bruin swimmers earned their fourth consecutive state championship on February 17, 2018. This prompted coach Chad Englehart to jump into the pool, fully clothed and clutching the state championship trophy, in what has become a hardwon tradition.

The team stroked past its competition at the Class 6A state championships in Edmond with 465.5 points, over 200 points ahead of second-place Edmond Memorial. The Bruins placed in the top three in all 11 events, winning eight and tying in a ninth, with Lady Bruins breaking multiple state records in individual events and relays.

The Bruins' dominance is illustrated by how in both the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke, Kate Steward, Erin Downey, and Sydney Perry captured the first three places, with Kate Steward setting a new state record in both events.

Bartlesville swept all three girls relays:
  • state champions in the 200 yd medley with Delaney Shipman, Kate Steward, Greta Olsen, and Sydney Perry
  • new state record in the 200 yd freestyle with June Harris, Allison Biddinger, Sydney Perry, and Greta Olsen
  • new state record in the 400 yd freestyle with June Harris, Allison Biddinger, Erin Downey, and Kate Steward
Individual event state champions among the Lady Bruins were:
  • Kate Steward set new state records in both the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke and was also part of a state record-setting relay team plus part of another state champion relay team
  • Greta Olsen was the state champion in both the 50 yd freestyle and 100 yd butterfly and was also part of a state record-setting relay team plus part of another state champion relay team

  • Emily Giovannetti was the state champion in the 500 yd freestyle

Coach Chad Englehart recognized that the five senior girls who spearheaded the Bruins at the meet will all be swimming in college next year.  He told the Tulsa World's Justin Hite, "It'll be really exciting and adventurous to see who is going to step up behind them. ... It's been a real honor to work with those girls."

“Just being able to prove ourselves over and over again with how hard we worked and how much we wanted it, having such an amazing group of girls doing it with me makes it a million times better. You can have fast teams without a great team dynamic. Luckily, we have both. I feel very lucky to be able to swim with this team and win for the fourth time with this team.”

Kate set two new individual state records, was part of a relay that set another state record, and part of another state champion relay,  helping propel the Lady Bruins to their 4th consecutive state championship
