De Angelis- Today, students reflected on task two of the Ancient and Afraid project.  We discussed the following vocabulary as it related to the task:  agriculture, domestication, irrigation, surplus, society.

Perkins-We reviewed simple and compound sentences and will move on to complex asap. Then we worked on our Culture posters.

Today we did a gallery walk of the "Who's who" posters made by each math class in the school, attempting to solve the puzzles and determine if there was a unique solution to each one.

Perkins: After the read aloud, students worked on their Greek and Latin roots vocabulary.
Homework: Read 20 minutes, Vocab. packet is due Monday.  Vocabulary test on Monday.

Costello: P5 reading students needed to retake yesterday's spelling test on IC portal due to a correction malfunction.  It is the same test but hopefully IC portal will be able to auto correct it this time.  Reading students in both classes have been given their new vocabulary assignment for the week. The assignment is progress checked on Thursday, due on Monday and the assessment is on Monday. Reading students were introduced to the literature circle role of the summarizer today.  The "Elements of Plot" were discussed in relationship to the upcoming field trip to see the musical, "Oliver." Read 20 minutes per night.

Activity 4 day two.  We looked at the claims and evidence worksheet students did for homework.  corrections and analysis took place. Students looked at another data table related tot he activity and started to analyze it and turn the statistics into percentages.  No homework.

 De Angelis-  Today students worked on  a baseline writing prompt.  We also reviewed how to write to a prompt.  Homework- begin watching the video in Google Classroom on Complex Sentences.

Perkins: We began an Edu-Scrum on culture where we researched the various elements of culture, but in a culture different from our own.

Today we started by solving a word problem and incorporating MP#2 into our responses; we were also introduced to a new Warm-up activity (Agree or disagree) and used this to introduce MP #3 (Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others).

Students continue to work on Activity 4 of the NIH: Doing Science simulation.  Students are pulling together their understanding of testable question, claims, evidence, reasoning/analysis, and next testable question.  Students had a google classroom form to fill out for homework.

De Angelis- Today we began a problem - solving unit entitled ANCIENT AND AFRAID.  Students are working in groups to complete various tasks.  Today was the first of four tasks.

Homework-  play the first on-line exercise found on the last slide of the video.  Record Scores.  Please note the above reminder  (in red) about the four kinds of sentences retake being offered on Friday.



Perkins: We did a second Edu-Scrum activity today pretending that it is 1500 BCE and their group had to survive for 3 days on a destination.
Homework: RETAKE ON 4 SENTENCE TYPES IS ON FRIDAY. TAKE THE AVAILABLE WORKSHEETS TO PRACTICE. CHECK YOUR EMAIL TO SEE YOUR GRADE.

DeAngelis- Today we started our Ancient and Afraid problem solving activities with an introduction to the necessary vocabulary.  Students worked in groups using the EduScrum format to complete vocabulary work.  Not all groups finished, but they are well on their way.

Homework-  Finish watching this week's video on simple and compound sentences.



Perkins: WE did an Edu-Scrum activity (first one) and worked on vocabulary for early civilizations. 
REtake for 4 sentence assessment is on Friday, but students must complete at least 1 worksheet before they are eligible for a retake. Scores have been emailed to students-they will not be on the IC portal until after Friday's retake.

Students worked on day 2 of the Doing Science NIH simulation.  Students completed the first Invetigative Report Form. Students started the second form and analyzed data today, turning fractions into percents. Period 1 homework is to finish the 2nd IRF. Period 2 science has no homework as they did not make quite as much progress in the statistics and number crunching.

DeAngelis -  Today we reviewed paragraph structure and discussed the importance of that topic sentence. We then analyzed various topic sentences written by students in an advanced writing course.

Today we finished work on our "Who's who" posters and presented the information to the rest of the class and allowed everyone to try to see if they could solve our graphs. Today we observed a simple experiment where starch based packing peanuts were dissolved in a beaker of water. We recorded what happened every minute for 10 minutes and will be extending this experiment next week by attempting to dissolve the peanuts using various mediums.

DeAngelis-  Great discussions on what makes good writing.  We looked at, analyzed, and graded several samples of student writing (from other schools).  Students did a great job being the teacher!

Perkins: We reviewed several examples of writing done by students at another school and ranked them on a scale of 1-4.
Homework: First assessment on sentence types is tomorrow.

Today we continued talking about the "Who's who" activity from yesterday by breaking into groups of 5 or 6 and creating our own "Who's who" which will be displayed in the hallway outside of the gymnasium.
