About Me

My name is Oisin O'Searcoid (pronounced "O-Shark-oid"). I graduated from UCD Dublin, Ireland in 2006 with a degree in Mathematics and Gaeilge (Irish language). I then spent a few years working in marketing and finance in London, England, before moving to the US in 2009. During the following years I fulfilled the requirements for a teaching certification while substitute teaching in Saco, Old Orchard Beach, and Dayton. I began teaching at BEMS in 2012, as a 6th Grade Special Education Resource teacher before taking my current position in 8th Grade at the start of the 2013-14 school year. I am continuing my education at St Joseph's College of Maine, where I am working towards a Masters degree in Educational Leadership. I advise the BEMS Chess Club, and during the Winter season I coach both the BEMS and BEMS Chess Teams. In the Fall, I coach the 8th Grade Girls Soccer Team. I live in Standish with my wife Jennifer and our children Cillian and Máire. Aside from soccer and chess, I also enjoy baseball (Detroit Tigers) and cooking.

My students quickly learn that I have a passion for technology. I strive to teach them to utilize the technology available to them to its fullest capacity, and to encourage them to become self-directed and lifelong learners. Exciting MLTI features in our district allow us a realistic opportunity to be a mostly paperless classroom, and therefore this website serves as a hub for our classroom learning. Our Math curriculum is fully aligned with the 8th grade Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, and we utilize several excellent online resources that provide valuable information to help us better understand the proficiency of students as they progress through the content at a pace that challenges them without overwhelming them. The goal is for each and every student to reach the pinnacle of their potential without holding them back in any way.
