5th Gr. Instrumental Music

a
This is the year we begin your life-long adventure into playing music!  Beginning instrumental music instruction is offered to all 5th grade students and covers the basics of playing a concert band instrument and reading music.  Lessons are scheduled by instrument, or similar instruments, once per week for 40 minutes. In addition to their instrumental class, band students will perform in 2 concerts  during the year.  High performing students will have the additional opportunity to participate in the all-district band which performs at the annual Visual & Performing Arts Night in May.
In order for a student to participate in the instrumental program they must:
    1. obtain an instrument
    2. purchase band method book and instrument specific accessories
Band is a course in which your child fulfills their 5th gr. music standards and Maine Guiding Principles. Therefore, students are assessed regularly through the preparation for class, completion of homework (home practice), performance of exercises, and concert repertoire.  The expected commitment to the band is through the first year.  This allows the student the full experience of individual lessons, small & large group work and a large group performance.  Please take this into consideration when allowing your student to make decision about their involvement in the program.
In order for you child to succeed in this program, daily practicing is a necessity.  You, as a parent, can play a huge role in their success by monitoring your child’s practicing.  SOME IS BETTER THAN NONE!!!  It is greatly encouraged!  Students will bring home a practice record weekly to keep track of how much time they practice and what they specifically worked on. You, as the parent, are asked to sign this before it is returned to school.
On-line rental arrangements continue this year.  Don't wait in line for a long time , make your arrangements through Music & Arts and have your child's instrument delivered to school.  Less hassle and less paperwork!
Please come this night if: you want to rent/buy an instrument, own/have instrument and need the method book and supplies, you would like to meet me and ask any questions, have an instrument and need it inspected by me or our Music and Arts Centers representative.  You will need to purchase the method book, Essential Elements 2000 Book 1 and a music stand.  These are available  at the parent night.
If you can not make the parent night and need to rent an instrument, you can do it online or go directly to the Music & Arts Center (formerly American Music) in West Falmouth.  Please call them at 1-800-873-2888 with questions.
