    Dr. Smith's research area is bioinformatics with specialization in non-coding RNA (ncRNA) gene search.
    Specifically, improvements to speed and efficacy of covariance-model-based ncRNA search through
    modifications to algorithms, improved model parameter estimation, and special-purpose computing architectures.
