Sandy Shoen grew up in Missoula, MT and started her orchestra journey in the fifth grade as a violist.  She switched to the string bass in sixth grade,


which became her principal instrument. Sandy also joined the band program in middle school as a trumpeter.  This experience led her to join th

e jazz band, pep band, marching band (where she was a drum major) and the symphony orchestra at Hellgate High School in Missoula.  After graduating from the University of Montana, Sandy taught band and orchestra in Bozeman, MT before attending graduate school at the Boise State University. She is currently the director of orchestras at Koelsch Elementary, Mountain View Elementary and Capital High School in Boise.  Sandy has been the previous director of the Junior High Honor Orchestra, the organizing chair for the Idaho All-State Orchestra, the secretary of the Idaho Music Educators, the string chairman for the District III Music Educators, and coached the Color Guard at Capital. As a professional bassist, Sandy has played in the Missoula, Billings, Bozeman, Butte and Great Falls Symphony Orchestras.  Through these symph

ony orchestras Sandy has performed with the Moody Blues and country artist Trisha Yearwood. She has been an adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor in Montana and Idaho.
This year, Sandy was one of sixteen conductors selected to participate in the New York Conductor’s Institute. Sandy also worked for the USFS Forest Service for eight seasons as a fire technician.
