How are ESL students identified?

All new students enrolling in the district complete a Home Language Survey.  In order to assure that all potential ESL students are identified and offered ESL services, Bethel Local Schools is required to assess the English language proficiency of students identified on the Home Language Survey as having a home language other than English.  At Bethel students who have a home language other than English are assessed using LAS Links (Language Assessment Scales). IF the student does not score as Proficient in the English language, they are offered ESL Services.

Testing ~ The Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA)

State and Federal law require an annual assessment of K-12 English Language Learner (ELL) students to measure their English language proficiency. Beginning this school year, the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) is the assessment used for testing English language proficiency for Ohio ELL students in Grades K-12.  English Language Learners are tested on English skills in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

The K-12 OELPA test window is February 6 and March 31, 2017.

ESL students will be pulled out individually or in small groups for the OELPA.  Additional information on the OELPA will be forthcoming.
