02: THE MARSTEN HOUSE

EXTERNAL SET: THEN AND NOW
©1979 Frederick S. Clarke (Cinefantastique, Vol. 9 No. 2, Page 11)
Image 000_001a
Notes: How it was done. What $100,000 bought you back in 1979. The family that lived in the real property were also paid $20,000 to move out during filming, and were guaranteed all the timber used in construction afterwards. Are you a member of that family? Please get in touch HERE if you are.

Notes: And how it is 36 years later in May 2015. A lot less trees around, and the building has been extended where the right hand large square window is.

Location: 850 Bluff Street, Ferndale, CA 95536
Location Visit: 29 May 2015
Datum Point: 40.572469, -124.259437
Notes: This is the location everyone seems to know as 'the house on the hill'.

Scene 002: DAY

Notes: Tree and trees have overtaken this view now.

Image 002_005a
Notes: Quite a lot of change here, but recognisable: the white fence has been renewed, but in the same style/configuration; that new tree has appeared; the sidewalk now reaches this far out of town; and the field in the upper image (now obscured by many trees) has been built on.

Notes: Site looks very run down here (though 2007 image quality poor). There are still trees to the left behind building.

Image 002_010b
Notes: Site looking a lot more cared for, though the trees to left behind building are now gone.

Notes: The same view in 2015, and confirmation of that address.

Notes: The transformation from brown and parched to green and lush is evident here.

Notes: A lot of change, but not much really.

Scene 012: NIGHT

Notes: Hard to match up after so much time, and at a different time of day!

Scene 024: DAY

Notes: A lot greener now.

Scene 042: NIGHT

Notes: Would that lorry fit on this space today?

Scene 044: NIGHT

Image 044_018a
Notes: Believe it or not, this is the same spot (minus the dark, the false Marsten House basement, and the many trees that used to be here).

Image 061_007a
Notes: The greatest change is seen in this view. Other than the fence (which is not the original, but almost in the same place) there is hardly anything visible to tie these two images together.

Image 061_012a
Notes: Slightly to the left of the view in images 061_007 and 007a. Lush vegetation everywhere!

Scene 103: DAY
Image 103_006

©2015 Google (Image capture January 2011)
Image 103_006a
Notes: Lots of trees gone to left rear (and right foreground), and new tree by white fence. Not too much change considering the 32 years between these two images.

Notes: No Bonnie or Pontiac today!

Notes: No looming Marsten House now.

Notes: Still quite a climb up today.

Notes: Still an amazing location.

02.07: EXTERNAL
Location: Was on north-eastern corner plot on 38th Street/Bay Avenue, Little Neck, NY 11363
Datum Point: 40.770944, -73.754832 (approx. position of house)
Notes: The burning property scene used unused footage from the 1969 film The Arrangement (as per Tobe Hooper's commentary on the 2016 Warner Bros Blu-Ray release). The property and the plot it sat on no longer exist, but are covered by the present-day Regatta Place. However, some of the seawall is still in situ, and some surrounding landmarks are still visible (see images below).

Scene 108: NIGHT

Image 108_Burn TA002
Notes: The fire starts...

Image 108_Burn TA003
Notes: ...and takes hold. Look familiar?

Image 108_Burn TA004
Notes: A beautiful Long Island setting.

Image 108_Burn TA005
Notes: Viewed from the northern pier (there was one to the west, too).

Image 108_Burn TA006
Notes: And as viewed from the waters of Little Neck Bay. Pier in centre of shot.

Notes: The plot today (looking south east). The pier in the foreground is in roughly the same place as the pier in images 008_Burn TA005 and TA006. It may well have been built on the same supports.
