Welcome to the Birkbeck Counselling Association

The BCA was formed by a group of people involved in the psychodynamic counselling courses at Birkbeck, in response to a desire to continue their thinking beyond the course with those who have shared the experience. The purposes of the BCA as is now defined in the constitution are:-
  • To provide a range of meetings and events for the purposes of ongoing learning and continuing professional development (“CPD”).
  • To promote the application of psychodynamic/psychoanalytic ideas to a variety of occupational and professional settings, drawing upon the knowledge of individual, group and organisational processes which are unique aspects of the counselling training at Birkbeck, and/or relevant Birkbeck courses.
  • To help members sustain and develop contacts and networks both socially, and for professional purposes, including the possibility of client referrals.
  • To share and reflect on the experience of good practice in a broad range of work settings.
The association currently has 130 members and is active and well used by its members. The executive committee, made up of between 6 and 10 volunteers is voted in by the members.

This committee plus a paid Administrator meets 4 or 5 times a year. It manages the running of the association and organises conferences and events.

Membership is open to current students, tutors, and those who have successfully completed one of the Birkbeck courses listed in the constitution.
