Changes to Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service - January 27, 2012

-- Preliminary Statement from Information Technology Services regarding the announcement

Effective March 1, 2012, Google has announced changes to their Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.  Several users have asked how this will effect their BMail account.  We'll attempt to answer that question.

First, details of the changes can be found on Google's web site athttp://www.google.com/policies.  This link provides an overview of the changes, with links at the top for information on the new Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, as well as an FAQ.

In a statement recently released by SUNY's Office of General Counsel, Google's changes to the Privacy Policy and Terms of Service only impact the consumer apps.  The information provided describes how the changes apply to Gmail accounts.  It makes no changes to the Google Apps Education Edition agreement currently in effect.

BMail accounts are different, as our domain runs under the Google Apps Education Edition offering and is governed by a Terms of Service contract established between Google and SUNY.  Binghamton University has not activated additional apps beyond the core apps (BMail, Sites, Docs, Groups, Calendar and Chat). The new privacy policy does not change our contractual agreements.

BMail Recommendation
Information Technology Services strongly recommends that you use the web interface to access BMail, i.e. http://bmail.binghamton.edu

Why do we make this recommendation? Because: you can access your e-mail at any time, from any place using a PC or a Mac or a mobile device; you have over 25GB of storage and growing; it’s safe and secure; and you will have access to features and functionality that may not exist in your email client like Outlook, Thunderbird or Eudora.

The web interface will give you access to all the communication and collaboration tools that make up the Google Apps suite.

Browser Support for Google Apps - June 7, 2011

Google has announced important changes to Google Apps browser support and recommended steps to take. Beginning on August 1, 2011, Google Apps support for the following browsers versions will be DISCONTINUED:

- Microsoft Internet Explorer 7
- Mozilla Firefox 3.5
- Apple Safari 3

After August 1, you and your users may have trouble using certain features in Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk, Google Docs and Google Sites with these older browsers, and eventually these apps may stop working entirely. We are making this change to give users the best experience with Google Apps, so we can offer the capabilities of modern browsers to deliver features such as desktop notifications for Gmail and drag-and-drop file upload in Google Docs.

For this reason, beginning August 1, 2011, Google Apps will support the current and previous major releases of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari on a rolling basis. Each time a new version is released, we’ll begin supporting that version and stop supporting the third-oldest version.

For information on fully supported browsers for Google Apps click here.

Oracle E-Business Suite and Banner users please note-- before updating any browsers, review the browser certification matrix for use with Oracle E-Business Suite 11i found at (http://pegasus.binghamton.edu:6128/certifications.htm).  This matrix should apply to Banner as well.  For the Windows platform, Internet Explorer v8 is certified for Oracle E-Business Suite, Banner and Google Apps.
