Today’s photo challenge is based on the work of artist Peter Root, who created a 100,000-staple urban landscape installation in 2011 in the Channel Islands (UK-dependent islands off the coast of France).
Take a full two minutes and take a look at the full gallery (and read the story behind this):
This has since led to many copycat versions of this project, including smaller, “portable” versions that can be photographed in a studio, against a monitor or screen, or elsewhere.
For this project, you are going to create your own STAPLE CITY and produce a gallery of photographs of it.
Tutorial (this is just one way) + examples:

TAKE A MINUTE RIGHT NOW and do a Google image search for “Staple city.” See all the different possible approaches.
CHALLENGE DESCRIPTION:
(You can choose to build your city independently or with a group of 2-3. Each student needs to shoot their own photos, however.)
Part 1: Creating your city
Look at some examples and start thinking about what you want your city to look like
Consider what base you want to use. Here are some of the supplies we have available:
Black acrylic (reflective)
Black slate (matte)
Black card stock (to cover any surface) - feel free to cut to size
Aluminum foil
Aluminum baking trays (can turn upside and use as a raised base
Black and white foam core
Light tables
Music stands
Consider your background. Options include:
Black or white foam core
One of the studio backdrops
An image on a computer monitor (or just the monitor, off)
Light table with something draped over it
There are a whole variety of staple sizes to work with - take what you need but don’t hog them all!
Decide where your city needs to go to be photographed BEFORE you start building!
Plan on spending the rest of the first period building your city. Ask if there are additional supplies you might need (within reason).
Part 2: Photographing your city (and editing your images)
Once your city looks complete and has a base and/or background you like, consider lighting. It can be as simple as ambient light or your phone’s flashlight, or as complex as studio lighting and multiple light sources.
Take a whole series of images capturing many different angles of your city. Consider using macro gear (extension tubes, reverse lens, etc.) and/or a tripod. Shoot RAW.
In Lightroom, be creative with your development. You can play with White Balance or Split Toning to get interesting colour looks. A vignette might (or might not) look appropriate.
Go for variety. You can include some black and white images but try to not have them all B&W.
Between 5-10 images are encouraged
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:
Once your best 5-10 images have been developed in Lightroom, export them.
*** To make things easier to organize, use the “File Naming” feature in the Lightroom Export menu to name each image with your first and last name (the set will number automatically).
Copy all of the exported images to the common Drive folder that’s linked in Google Classroom.
Click TURN IN to officially signal that you’ve completed the challenge!
WE WILL VIEW THE IMAGES TOGETHER AT THE END OF THIS PROJECT AND CHOOSE A BEST CITY AND A BEST PHOTO!
