During Library time, students listen to and discuss books, reinforce the different genres, and learn important library skills. Second, Third and Fourth grade students also learn how to use the online card catalog to help find books they want to read. First and Second grade students use the 30 minute library time to learn and practice typing skills.
First, Second, and Third grade students participate in the Monarch Award program while Fourth grade students participate in the Bluestem Award program. These award programs are sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA). The children are challenged to read at least five award books. Those that meet this goal, then vote for his/her favorite book. The results are sent to ISLMA to be tallied with votes from other participating Illinois schools and the winning books announced in the Spring.
Book Exchange is a scheduled time each week for returning and checking out library books. Books are checked out for one week and may be renewed for another week. Students must bring the book with them to book exchange to renew it.
If a child forgets his/her library book, he/she will:
**receive a friendly reminder note the first time
**need to miss a recess at the time of the second notice (second note sent)
**receive a note with the replacement cost of the book. The book must be returned OR paid for at this time. A child may only have one book out at a time. Children may have a second book checked out only when the teacher has a special project in the classroom.
