Sunset Accelerated Academic Honors Program

Sunset Honors Diploma

Sunset High School wants to provide all students at all levels of their education a means to challenge themselves and foster their aspirations as learners.  The Sunset Honors Diploma provides a framework of achievement for all students through their participation in advanced  coursework and minimum grade requirements.  Graduating students who accomplish the Honors Diploma requirements will be recognized with this special award.

Awarding the Diploma

Students who seek to achieve the Sunset Honors Diploma will need to earn a minimum of 12 credits in honors designated courses and through accelerated academic learning activities throughout their four years at Sunset High School.  Grade requirements will apply to all honors courses and activities.

Sunset Honors Program Courses
The following courses have been designated as honors courses.  Participation in these courses, and achieving a course grade of B or above, qualifies a student to earn credit toward the Honors Diploma. The curriculum in these courses is structured to prepare students for their continued study in Sunset's IB Program courses.

Freshman Honors Courses:
    Algebra 2, Advanced Algebra 2, or higher level math
    Stem Physics
    Stem Chemistry
    Java Programming
    Spanish Language as Literature levels 1 & 2

Sophomore Honors Courses:
    Functional Analysis/Trig, Pre-Calculus, or higher level math
    Stem Chemistry or Stem Physics
    IB Chemistry (note: IB testing not available to sophomores)
    IB Psychology (note: IB testing not available to sophomores)
    IB Economics (note: IB testing not available to sophomores)
     Spanish Language as Literature levels 1 & 2

Junior and Senior Honors Courses:
    Any International Baccalaureate (IB) Course
    AP Statistics
    Health Careers and Advanced Health Careers
    Dual-Credit Courses (PCC, PSU)

Other Honors Courses:
     Madrigals Choir (10-12; Audition Required)
     Jazz Band (10-12; Prerequisite Required)





Sunset Honors Program Courses with Accelerated Academic Honors Activities
The following courses contain within them opportunities to gain an honors designation through student-driven, and teacher facilitated, accelerated academic learning activities. The accelerated activities within these courses are intended to be research based and prepared by the student independently as an extension of their learning in the course. 
Accelerated learning activities are designed to prepare students for their continued study in Sunset's IB Program courses.

Freshman Honors Activities:
    Literature and Composition 9 
    World History 9 
    Art 1 & 2, Graphic Design 1 & 2, Ceramics 1 & 2
    World Language levels 1-4  (9-12)
    
Sophomore Honors Activities:
    Literature and Composition 10
    World History 10
