2016 – 2017 Junior Hockey Letter
Dear Parents & Players,
I hope everyone had a great summer, but no more visions of beaches, BBQ’s and golf -- it is time to start thinking hockey! The Club already looks great, and the staff has been working hard to have everything perfect for opening day. Once again, Mark Cole will offer two Friday clinics (at Port Washington, with sessions 2:30-4:00 and 4:00-5:30) and we will have an additional series of Clinics at BD prior to tryouts as always. Please read the following attachments for information concerning the Preseason Clinics and Tryout Schedules and the details of the individual hockey programs:
Our continued mission is to ensure that we develop our young players, both on and off the ice. The program will focus on skill development, teamwork and competition. Most importantly, the Junior Hockey Committee wants to ensure that each child has a positive and enjoyable hockey experience at Beaver Dam. To this end, we continue to rely on both our paid and volunteer coaches who instruct and develop our young skaters. These men and women give countless hours to our Club, and help our children learn more about hockey and what it takes to be part of a team. While we will continue to work with these individuals to better prepare them to serve as coaches, it is imperative that every player and parent treats Greg and all coaches with the highest level of respect and demonstrates a real commitment throughout the season. Each coach has their own style and will establish their team’s guidelines in a parent/player meeting prior to the start of the year. Please come to me, rather than a coach, if you have an issue about ANYTHING related to your hockey player, a teammate, another parent or coach during the season, and a good rule of thumb is to wait 24 hours to “cool down” before attempting to discuss something. Issues about scheduling or related matters can be brought directly to Greg.
During their summer meetings, the Club League instituted some changes with regard to travel players who also play for Club teams, which have also been adopted by BD for the ’16-’17 season:any interested travel player will still have to sign a Commitment Letter, but now it will require participation at a tryout session, attendance of at least one of the two weekly practices, playing in 50%of all games (and separately 50% of League games to ensure playoff eligibility) and all playoff games. We can’t be certain at this point how many, if any, travel playing members will actually try-out for A teams, but players unable to commit to their Beaver Dam team in this way will not be eligible.
The JuniorHockey Program grows every year and we are committed to continuously improving the product – engaging additional professional coaches for A and B practices and expanding and adapting the individual programs and teams to accommodate all children at all levels. In furthering that goal, we decided to also adjust the composition of the Committee to include more parents with hockey age children currently in the program. I would like to personally thank those outgoing Committee members for their service and the significant contributions they have made to the program. For A-team tryouts, team selections will now be made by a group of non-parent/coaches with no affiliations to any players under consideration for that team; these volunteers will observe the tryout sessions and select those players they deem most worthy. Distancing any parents and coaches from the selection process eliminates the most trying part of volunteering at BD, while reassuring all participants that they are being treated equally. The Board has also introduced an earlier prospective member Coffee to accommodate new hockey players, so please alert Membership if you have a candidate who can make the requirements and wants to try-out for an A team. Finally, we have elected to forego the Thanksgiving/Hackensack tournament this year.
As we prepare for the season we would like to remind members that the Pro-Shop at Beaver Dam will be open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday until the club opens in November.
