2019-20 Join Band

This page is for current 5th-graders (and parents) who are interested in joining 6th-grade band.

Your band director has set up a day when each student will be able to try the band instruments during school.  After that day, the next step is for the student and parent to attend one of the 6 BCSC Band Sign-up Nights:

Sign-up nights #1 , #2, #4, and #5 are one-hour meetings (for student and parent) where you will learn about the band program and can rent an instrument (students will not be trying instruments on these nights).  Any student/parent from any school can attend any night.

Rent-to-own:  Most parents rent-to-own through Paige’s Music, who will be at our sign-up.  You make a one-time purchase of a  “starter pack" (music book & accessories) for $39.95 and begin a rental.  The rental cost for flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone is $33 per month, and percussion is $25 per month –if the instrument is damaged or lost or stolen it is repaired or replaced free… this is the greatest advantage to renting!  Your instrument is delivered June 3 to the Academy and you have 6 weeks to try the instrument before your first rental payment is due.  If you wish to cancel for any reason, simply return the instrument before July 15 and absolutely no rental or return fees are due!

Free School-owned:  If renting is not in the family budget, we will provide a free instrument for you.  We ask that you truly have a financial need for this, as we have a very limited supply.  You must be able to attend all 3 weeks of the Summer Band Academy.  Fill out the School Owned Instrument Request and turn it in to your band director or music teacher as soon as possible (before your sign-up).

Already owned or purchasing:  If you already own an instrument, bring it to the sign-up so that we can make sure it is ready for use.  If you are considering buying an instrument, ask our advice first!  Beware of internet specials offering new “instruments” for ridiculously low prices, for example $100.  These are toys; they are hard to play; they will break and no local shops will repair them!  We have a list of quality instrument brands that we know will provide you with a successful band experience.

Instruments from Paige's arrive on Monday, June 3 at Columbus East High School! Free classes meet each weekday morning for one hour, leading up to your first concert on Thursday, June 20!  If you can't make all the classes, come to as many as possible.  While starting in the summer is the typical and easiest way to learn to play, we realize some parents and children may not be able to attend  --in that case, please contact your director so that we can make arrangements for your child to start band in the fall.

A FREE band t-shirt is given to each student at the sign-up night once you have registered for the FREE Summer Band Academy or  rented an instrument or purchased a “starter pack" or brought in an instrument you already own for your director to check out.
