Goals

Goals of the Choral Music Program

The mission of the Choral Music Programs at Read Mountain Middle School and Lord Botetourt High School is to encourage growth in musicians through the development of passion, ability, confidence and character while building community and professionalism. Botetourt County Choral Music seeks to provide all members with a quality education in singing, singing together, and related activities.

The goals of the choral program are:

  • To provide a progressive study of vocal and choral techniques.

  • To build sight-singing skills and a basic understanding of music theory.

  • To develop an appreciation of many styles of music.

  • To cultivate self-confidence and self-discipline in students through working as a team member.

  • To help students build citizenship traits through mutually respectful relationships with teachers and peers.

  • To provide opportunities for performance, musical and personal growth and creative self-expression.

  • To develop understanding of the important role music plays in the lives of individuals as well as their communities.

  • To build a framework for lifelong appreciation of music.

Strategies for Meeting Goals

Singing will be our primary activity and will occur most every day as we learn about our voices, how they work, and how to use them expressively. Each member should have all necessary materials, and be present, on time, appropriately dressed for all rehearsals and performances. We will also be making a concentrated effort to improve our music reading skills, interpretive skills and our knowledge of how to be a whole musician. This includes knowing how to “speak the language” (vocabulary), knowing how to actively and perceptively listen to music (learning how music is composed and the basic concepts of harmony), and knowing something of music’s relationship to history and culture. Students will demonstrate mastery of class objectives both through performances and written assessments.
