How To Be Successful in Choir Class

Rehearsal Etiquette

Success in performance is directly proportional to success in rehearsal. A choir will never perform better than it rehearses, and efficient rehearsals will lead to successful choirs.

In general, these can be summed up in one sentence:

Always be in the right place at the right time with the right materials and the right attitude.

How To Be Successful in Choir Class

  • Respect yourself and others. We are working as a team and it always works best when we show respect to each other, to the director, to school property and to property of others.

  • Be punctual. Tardiness is a sign of disrespect.

  • The only type of discipline that is truly effective is self-discipline. Every ensemble member is responsible for the success of the entire choir.

  • Concentrate and be ready to move quickly between tasks.

  • Warm-ups will be given to achieve proper posture, placement of the voice, articulation of vowels and consonants. Proper positioning of the body is critical in making best use of the vocal instrument.

  • Listen and participate in the music being rehearsed at all times. The more intensely each member listens and responds to the music around them, the higher the performance level of the choir.

  • Limit unnecessary talking when we are trying to get work done.

  • Use a pencil to make markings on music to save valuable rehearsal time and contribute to the quality of the chorus. How singing and individual participation works is further outlined in the grading policy.

  • Students experiencing medical related troubles that make them unable to sing in rehearsal should bring a note of verification from a parent until vocal or other problems are resolved. Although this student may not be singing, students still need to participate as outlined in other behaviors listed above.

  • Remember to not bring food, drink (other than water), candy, or gum in the music room.
