Advanced Composition

Paper #1


Your first paper will argue the importance of an event in history.  You may choose any event that you wish. You should focus on an event that you feel has changed history.  Your paper will argue the importance of the event, as well as, how it affected society.  The following are guidelines that MUST BE MET:

1.  Your topic must be approved by me!!!!

2.  Your paper must be 7-10 pages long.  You will be penalized if your paper length does not meet or exceeds this requirement.  (length does not include pictures or bibliography)

3.   You must have a minimum of 7 sources

a.  at least one print source

b.  at least one electronic source

4.  You must use a variety of in-text citations, but limit yourself to only two long quotes.

5.  You will complete and turn in at least 40 note cards.

6.  Your paper will be typed, no larger than 12 font size, using either Helvetica or Geneva typeface.

7.  You must use correct MLA research format for your paper and bibliography.  (Lay-out, header, citations, etc.)

8.  A complete paper will contain an outline, rough draft,  and polished copy.

9.  Any late paper will loose 10% each day.  No paper accepted after the third day.

10.  The paper is due Friday, March 15th.

Paper #2

Paper #2 is an extensive research paper on a human being of your choice.  You will be required to choose a person (living or dead) and create a 17-20 page paper.  You may choose to research a group instead, if the group is instrumental to the whole.  The following is a list to help you generate names:

*contributed to society *contributed to the United States

*changed history *influenced a group

*overcame adversary *changed a perspective

A person’s life is an enormous subject to tackle.  Make sure your topic is narrowed to a specific.  You are not telling me about the person’s life, you are defending a point and using other scholars to back your claim.  (Why is this person influential and what did they influence) 


The following are guidelines that must be met:

1.  Your topic must be approved by me!!!

3.  You will create an outline that will be turned in

4.  Your paper must be 17-20 pages long.  You will be penalized if your length does not meet or exceeds that which is given.

5.  Your works cited page must contain at least 12 sources:

b.  electronic source (Electric Library, SIRS)

c.  web site

7.  You must use the correct MLA research for for your paper and bibliography (lay-out, header, citations, etc.)

Mock Trial

The day before Thanksgiving is when the annual senior Mock Trial will be held. In English class, we will prepare resumes, letters of applications, and review/practice interview tips and techniques.
*Students will all create a professional resume (make sure to put this in your portfolio)
*Students will write a letter of Application
*Students will practice interview etiquette
*Students will interview for desired Mock Trial Position with a community member
