What is the IHSSA?

IHSSA (or Iowa High School Speech Association) is an organization open to all high schools in the state of Iowa.  IHSSA is a performance organization, rather than a championship organization.  Students are recognized for individual performance, rather than "beating" someone else in competition.  Large group competitions are held in late January, and individual event competitions in late February/March.

The Iowa High School Speech Association consists of high schools from four districts in Iowa.  Baxter High School participates in the Southeast District of Iowa.  The IHSSA hosts competitions in Large Group and Individual Events (see description on the back).  At district contest, students must receive a Division I Rating to move on to State competition.  At State, students must earn a Division I Rating AND receive nominations from judges to move on to All-State.  At Large Group All-State Festival, students may earn the Critic's Choice Award from the judge as the best performance of the day.
