Introduction to School Counseling

As the school counselor it is my job to help promote student achievement. I work as an advocate for our students with an emphasis on their academics, career growth, and personal/social development. All students have the ability to find success in school and it is up to us (school personnel, parents, and students) to work as a team so all students can reach their potential.

If your student is struggling with anything that could potentially impact their learning, please let us know.

Programs

In the Fall I visit all 5th and 6th grade classrooms and teach bully prevention. We discuss what bullying is, how it effects people, how to respond to it, and how to put a stop to it.

In the Fall 7th and 8th grade students have the opportunity to apply to be Peer Mediators. After mediation training, these students act as leaders on our campus helping their peers problem solve.

In the Winter suicide prevention is taught to all 7th and 8th grade students. The Youth Suicide Prevention Program is taught so that our students have an understanding of what to do and where to go for help if they have a friend thinking of suicide, or if they are thinking about it themselves.

If you have a student in 7th or 8th grade, now is the time to apply for the College Bound Scholarship. This program is an early commitment of state financial aid to students who qualify and apply in middle school and keep the College Bound Pledge.

For 8th graders, high school forecasting takes place in the Spring. This school year we will be visiting Battle Ground High School on March 9th. The high school will be hosting an Open House on March 12th. Shortly after, with the support of myself and the 8th grade teaching team, your students will forecast for their high school classes. It is great for parents to be involved with the forecasting process; please be talking with your student about high school planning and feel free to be in contact with any questions.

Resources

I am Amboy Middle School's Homeless Liaison. If your family is in need of assistance, please be in contact. The McKinney Vento Act provides opportunities for your student and family and I am happy to coordinate this assistance.

Amboy Middle School coordinates with the SHARE Backpack program. This program provides a weekly food bag for families in need. If you find yourself in need, please be in contact. Also, feel free to learn more about the Backpack program here.

There are many resources for counseling and mental health services around Clark County. If your student or a fellow family member is in need of further counseling services, this list may be of assistance.
