Majorette Tryouts week of May 15
Flag Tryouts week of May 22
Rifle Tryouts May 31 & June 1
Captain Tryouts June 2 (3:05, right after school)
Current Nitschmann students should attend Extra Help or go to Mrs. Hriniak's classroom from 3:05-3:45 while we wait for our elementary friends to join us.

Tryout Process Information:

·            Any student who will be in 6th - 8th grade in the coming school year is eligible to try out.  Students currently in bandfront are required to tryout for the upcoming season.

·            You must complete the online registration form before you may try out!

·            Tryouts will consist of marching skills and a routine with basic equipment skills.  All required skills will be taught to you at the tryout practices.

·            On the last day of your tryout week, you will perform your marching skills and routine skills in a small group.  You will be scored on Marching, Basic Skills, Routine, and Enthusiasm.

·            Students are allowed to try out for more than one section if they are worried about not making it into a particular section.

·            Students who would like to be in only the main guard do not need to try out, but must complete the online registration form so they may be placed on our bandfront roster.

·            Students are allowed to try out for bandfront, even if they play a band instrument and are planning on joining Nitschmann’s band.  Many students participate in both band and bandfront.

The Code of Conduct is in effect at all times.  Students are expected to be respectful, responsible, focused performers.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bandfront Tryouts

Does everyone make it?  How many students are chosen for each section?

We choose students for the sections based on tryout scores and ability, not based on a number of “slots” in the section.  We also choose a mix of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.

What equipment does Main Guard use?

Our main guard is an honor guard with presentation flags like the American flag, Pennsylvania flag, City of Bethlehem flag, BASD flag, and Nitschmann flag.  We also have a banner, honor guard rifles, sabres, and mace.  Main guard does not do routines in parades, so all you would need to do is learn the marching skills and get to know the equipment you carry.  During the winter season, Main Guard learns performance equipment like swing flags, flag batons, and giant flags.

How can I get to the tryout practices if I'm coming from elementary school?

We know there will be kids who arrive a few minutes late to the tryout practices, and we’ll have some people waiting in the lobby to show you how to get to our rehearsals.  There will probably be several students from your elementary school who also want to try out for bandfront, so ask around and see if someone can give you a ride.

Can I take a flag home to practice?

We have a limited number of flags that you may sign out to practice at home.  If you do not get to sign out a flag, try practicing with a broom, baseball bat, field hockey stick, etc.

Where can I get a baton?

You can buy a baton at the Music Center at the Westgate Mall for about $25.  If you would rather wait to buy a baton until you find out if you make the majorettes or not, you can borrow a baton from a friend for practices.  Mrs. Hriniak may have spare batons available to borrow at tryouts.

Can I try out for more than one section?

Yes!  If you are not chosen for your first choice section we encourage you to try out for another section.

How long will the tryouts go on the last day?

You do not need to wait for all students to complete their tryouts, so once you have completed your tryout routine in your small group you may go home.  Please plan your rides accordingly; you may need as little as 15 minutes for your tryout.

When will I know if I made the bandfront?

Your scores will be calculated after the tryouts and the results will be posted on Mrs. Hriniak’s website.  We will also email a list to the email addresses you provide on your online registration.  A paper copy of the list will be posted at Nitschmann and elementary schools will be emailed.

How will I get information about Summer Band?

Summer Band is held in August and runs Monday to Friday for two weeks.  You will receive more information by email, so please make sure to provide your email address on the online registration.

What does bandfront do in the winter season?

Bandfront is a year-round activity.  In the winter season, we prepare routines for an indoor-guard-syle performance.

Do I get to go on the spring trip if I’m in bandfront?

Yes!  Bandfront students participate in the spring trip and march with the band in a parade competition.

Can I be in bandfront and still play an instrument in band?

Yes!  We will work out a schedule so you spend some rehearsals with bandfront and some rehearsals with band.  You will continue to take instrument lessons as you normally would.

Time Commitments:

Summer Band: two weeks in August at Nitschmann (weeks of Aug. 7 and 14)

School Year Practices: every Monday and Thursday before school (7:15 am)

Performances: parades and pep rallies in the fall, parent performance in the winter, spring trip and concert performance in spring

Bandfront is a major time commitment.  You are only allowed 8 absences per school year.  Please keep these time commitments in mind, and let Mrs. Hriniak know if your schedule does not permit you to continue with bandfront.

Bandfront Rules and Regulations

Students will attend all rehearsals:

·            Bandfront attendance policy specifies a maximum of 8 absences per school year.

·            If you are injured but attending school, you are required to attend rehearsals.

·            Students must be on time for rehearsals.

·            Students will be permitted to attend academic help sessions, but these will count as an absence.

·            Summer rehearsals are necessary because of the fall parade season.  If any rehearsals are going to be missed during summer practice (example: family vacations) please contact the Band Front Advisor in advance.

Student Conduct:

·            The District Code of Conduct is in effect at all times.

·            Distric and school policies are in effect at all times: Language, Dress Code, Equipment, Uniform, etc.

Rehearsal/Performance Requirements:

·            Students are expected to be on time for all rehearsals.  Morning announcements start promptly at 7:15 am, and you must be seated and ready at that time.

·            Each section will have captains and co-captains as designated by the Bandfront Advisor and the Band Director.  The captains will be expected to make up routines for performances.  They will be expected to teach these routines to their section in a timely fashion.  The Advisor will assist in any way necessary.

·            At times, extra optional practices will be held.  Students may not skip Orchestra, Singers, or other early morning ensemble rehearsals to attend extra bandfront practices.

·            Students may participate in other extracurricular activities that do not interfere with Bandfront requirements and rehearsal schedules.

·            Students who play an instrument in band may also be in bandfront.  Your rehearsal schedule will be determined by the Band Director and the Bandfront Advisor.

·            Students are required to participate in all performances.  This includes parades.  There will be no excuses for dance, baton, cheerleading, or sports.  Missing performances can result in dismissal from Band Front.

·            Students will be required to follow all rules of the Nitschmann Band.

All parent volunteers must have their volunteer clearances on file in the school office.  If you don't have your clearances you will not be allowed to volunteer AND YOU WON'T EVEN BE ALLOWED INTO THE BUILDING!  This is important...get a volunteer packet in the office or see the clearance documents at the bottom of this web page.

REMINDER: When you come to school for early morning band practice, there will be construction and blocked roads.  PLEASE USE THE DROP OFF LANE ON UNION BLVD. Do not use the 9th Ave. driveway.
