Dear Barrow County School System Families,
We invite you to participate in a communications survey that can be accessed via our website, www.barrow.k12.ga.us. The survey will open on Wednesday November 8th and will remain open until the end of the day on Monday, November 20th.
Barrow County School System has joined with SCoPE School Surveys to gain input on the district’s communications. School Communications Performance Evaluation (SCoPE) Surveys seek feedback from our staff, parents and community members on how you receive information and whether you consider the communication to be effective. Through the surveys, we will learn whether people prefer receiving an email, seeing a post on social media, or reading about something in the local paper. We will also find out if we are providing enough information about key topics and issues.
SCoPE Surveys are conducted online in a secure portal and take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. You can access the surveys on desktop and laptop computers as well as most tablets and smartphones. The surveys are available in English and Spanish and participation is completely anonymous.
Because the reliability of the results increases with the percentage of people taking the surveys, participation is critical. We strongly encourage everyone to take the time to give us this extremely valuable feedback. Please note: you will need to complete one survey for each child that attends school in Barrow County Schools as the survey includes questions regarding communication at the classroom/teacher level.
Effective communication is essential to supporting our students’ success as well as our success as a school district. Once again, we need to hear from our constituents on what is working and what is not and we ask everyone to participate.
For questions on participating, contact Dr. Ken Greene, Assistant Superintendent Support Services, ken.greene@barrow.k12.ga.us.
Thank you in advance for your input,
Ken Greene

Ken Greene

This year we have a new reading assessment called TRC - Text Reading and Comprehension.  Like the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRA) your child took in previous years, this test also gives a reading level from A-Z.  However, we are finding that our students' TRC levels are several letters lower than previous years.  The range of scores for second grade has went from J-M with Scholastic to I-L with TRC.  You may see that your child's score has dropped from the end of the year last year.  Please don't panic!  Your child's teacher will be able to explain further at conferences.

September 28, 2016

Fall Festival will be next Friday, October 7, from 5-8 PM.

Our grade level is in charge of raising money to provide a holiday themed basket.  If you are able to donate a few dollars to help that would be wonderful!  Thank you for all you do in supporting our school.

Teachers will be sending home a sign up sheet asking for volunteers to help run their booth.  Please let your child's teacher know if you are interested in taking a 30 minute time slot.

Building Number Sense  A big part of your child's math success is your child's ability to think about numbers.  There are several key skills that your child should be able to do already and some things you can do to strengthen your child's ability to think about numbers.

Making 10: Since our number system is based on tens, being able to quickly make 10 is a key.  Your child should be able to tell you all the ways to make 10 as easily as breathing:  1 & 9, 2 & 8, 3 & 7, 4 & 6, 5 & 5.  When this is automatic, build on this skill by making 100!  A great way to practice this is when you are out shopping or going out to eat.  If a can of green beans is 79 cents, how close is that to $1.00.  Students should be able to mentally add up from 79 to 100 without a paper and pencil!  Help your child get to this point by asking:  79 to 80 = 1 and 80 to 100 is 20, so it is 21 away from 100!

Adding 10:  Students should also be able to add 10 to any number with ease.  Understanding that adding 10 is only changing the tens column will make mental math easier, too!

Decomposing Numbers: Your child should also be able to break apart other numbers as easily as they can break apart 10.   Give your child a number and have them tell you as many ways as they can think of to make that number.   For Example:  Not only is 9   5 + 4, but it is also 10 - 1!

Students should also be able to break down 2 digit numbers in this way and break them in to tens and ones.  For example:  36 can be broken down into 30 + 6, 18 + 18, and 20 + 16, just to name a few.

The more relationships between numbers that you child can see easily the more tools she will have at her fingertips for solving problems!

August 2, 2016

This week your child will be bringing home two important papers from the PTO.  One will be about joining PTO and the other will be a t-shirt order form.

This year we are offering one shirt for spirit wear, field trips, and field day.  Each grade level will have a different color of shirt.  If you would like to purchase one please get your order in by August 12.  There will be another opportunity to purchase shirts halfway through the school year.

Thanks for supporting our PTO!

Welcome to 2nd grade!  We hope that you will find this website to be informative and useful.  The website will be updated weekly to reflect the upcoming week's curriculum and materials.

We are looking forward to a great year with your children!
