What is Angelman Syndrome?
Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a severe neurological disorder characterized by developmental delays, problems with motor coordination and balance, and epilepsy. AS is a genetic-based disorder caused by a severe reduction in function of the Ube3a gene in the brain. Individuals with AS do not develop functional speech, and seizure disorders can be difficult to treat. They do tend to have a happy demeanor, characterized by frequent laughing, smiling and excitability. Individuals with AS require life-long care, intense therapies to help develop functional skills, therapies to improve their quality of life, and lots and lots of close medical supervision and interventions.
What is FAST?
The Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (or FAST) is an organization of families and professionals dedicated to finding a cure for Angelman Syndrome and related disorders through the funding of an aggressive research agenda, education, and advocacy.
