Hartnell College: Dean of Advanced Technology


Hartnell Community College, located in Salinas, California, is seeking a Dean of Advanced Technology who is bright, highly energetic, passionate about career education, and committed to servant leadership. Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Academic Affairs & Accreditation, this Dean is responsible for the new Alisal Campus and provides leadership and direction for advanced technology programs, faculty, and staff.  The Dean will work as a member of Hartnell’s leadership team to serve the college’s annual, unduplicated headcount of 18,229 students, of which approximately 62% are Hispanic, primarily Mexican-American.  

Exciting new initiatives under way at the new Alisal Campus include the Agricultural Business & Technology Institute and the Center for Sustainable Design and Construction. These programs currently include: Agriculture Business, Ag & Industrial Technology, Auto Technology, Diesel Technology, Drafting Technology, Food Safety, Precision Technology, Sustainable Construction, Sustainable Design, Welding Technology, and Computer Science, which is an expanding program.   

More than 200 industry leaders are actively involved in supporting the programs.  In the past three years, over $4 million has been raised from private contributions and public grants. The Dean directly supports the design, delivery methods, and continuous process improvement for Advanced Technology degree and certificate programs and workforce training programs. Faculty evaluation and instructional quality is a key responsibility of the position. The successful candidate will actively engage faculty; develop positive relationships with local industry, UCs, and CSUs; and participate actively with the Hartnell Foundation to raise funds and to take the lead on grant proposals and implementation. The Dean will help develop credit and non-credit programs that are relevant to community needs. 


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

1.      Works to support and develop a comprehensive advanced technology program for Hartnell College relevant to industry and community needs.

2.      Interacts with the local business community, schools, and college and university representatives to create advanced technology partnerships.  Establishes and maintains good community relations and delivers effective public presentations.

3.      Ensures successful operation of all aspects of the Alisal Campus and Center for Advanced Technology, including, among other issues, scheduling, personnel, facilities, and safety.

4.      Maintains responsibility for determining what data, surveys, and studies are required to identify the appropriate direction for advanced technology programs of the district to ensure relevancy and continuous quality improvement of advanced technology programs.

5.      Works closely with faculty and the Hartnell Foundation to actively identify and solicit resources for the program – both public and private – in the form of grants and contributions.

6.      Maintains responsibility for grant implementation and oversight in the preparation and timely completion of all proposals, reports, and records for grant-funded programs, and assists faculty, staff, and administrators in the required reporting and compliance of these programs.

7.      Examines, evaluates, and makes recommendations for potential technological innovations in advanced technology instruction and support.  Assists faculty in the acquisition, development, and utilization of instructional resources.

8.      Selects, trains, and orients faculty and support staff within the context of shared governance and union contracts as well as supports, evaluates, and mentors assigned academic and classified employees.

9.      Manages with openness and works to continuously enhance a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.

10.  Evaluates student needs, external requirements and regulations, and current trends to implement program modifications and improvements in a consultative environment.

11.  Works with faculty on an ongoing basis to ensure that required academic tasks, including, but not limited to, outlines, curriculum review/revisions, program review, and assessment of learning outcomes, are completed in a timely manner in accordance with accreditation standards and quality assurance.

12.  Coordinates and prepares timely and accurate performance and financial reports required by various federal, state, district, and college departments.

13.  Establishes and maintains effective and positive relationships with faculty and staff across the campus.

14.  Actively participates as part of the leadership team of the college.

15.  Performs other duties as assigned.



1.      A Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution.

2.      Demonstrated experience in leading teams to develop programs and course curriculum that meet industry needs and standards.

3.      Administrative experience, including experience in hiring, supporting, developing, and evaluating faculty and staff.

4.      Demonstrated experience in teaching and/or facilitation.

5.      Demonstrated responsibility for managing budgets, facilities, and equipment.

6.      Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.

7.      Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.



1.      Three years of postsecondary administrative experience in a multicultural environment.

2.      Three years of teaching experience in corporate training, a community college, or other higher education institution.

3.      Depth and breadth of knowledge in advanced technology and/or career technical education programs.

4.      Demonstrated success with continuous improvement processes.

5.      Experience in developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating relevant instructional program and course curriculum and corresponding services.

6.      Demonstrated industry experience related to program areas in Advanced Technology.

7.      Demonstrated ‘can do, sleeves rolled up’ approach to leading the division.

8.      Experience in developing, managing and administering complex budgets.

9.      Experience in managing and leading diverse personnel, including team building, cultural sensitivity, conflict resolution, and team projects.

10.  Background in successful resource development including, but not limited to, grant proposals, work with foundations, businesses and/or individuals or other similar development activities.

11.  Ability to communicate with the Spanish-speaking community.

12.  Identified commitment to shared governance principles; recognition of the importance of shared responsibility and a commitment to fostering open communication among all divisions, programs and services; commitment to principles of trust, team work and collaboration.

13.  Identified ability to interact effectively with diverse students, staff, faculty and administrators, individually and as team members.

14.  Track record of using sound, independent judgment in the interpretation and application of rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Hartnell College is a comprehensive community college and is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in California. Located on the California Central Coast, it enjoys the advantages of a rural setting in one of the most beautiful parts of the world with easy access to metropolitan life, including many educational institutions.

The college employs approximately 100 full-time and 300 adjunct faculty members, 150 classified employees, and 30 administrators.

The college has gained accolades for its success in forming partnerships and internships with NASA and other institutions to prepare students for research careers. The arts flourish with a studio arts program and The Western Stage theater company. The college is currently working closely with key leaders in local industry to develop vocational programs in sustainable agriculture and green construction.

Bond financing continues to provide funding for impressive new facilities on the main campus and on the 140-acre Alisal Campus. The King City Center opened in 2002 and now serves 1,500 of our students.

·        Salary range: $108,894 to $122,342 annually.

·        Within this salary range, the successful candidate’s starting salary will be

commensurate with education and experience.
