Hello Students, Families, and Visitors
I hope you are enjoying a fun summer and created amazing memories with family and friends. I also hope you are as excited about this school year as we all are. The 2016-17 school year is one of changes. We said goodbye/farewell to several Vanguard staff members at the end of last year. I am very excited about our new members to our Vanguard family. Please join me in welcoming them! I am confident your students are going to have an exceptional year.
As always, Vanguard strives to provide our students and families with a top-tier educational experience. In an effort to be proactive and informative, we have made some changes and improvements to our programs. Some of them are listed below. Please take the time to read through the following items.
Our student/parent handbook has been completely revamped to be a more comprehensive, useful tool. It is our intent to make the handbook a resource that you can refer to throughout the year when you have questions about programs, procedures, awards assemblies, emergencies, sports, and so on. The handbook has been updated and uploaded to our school website under the Parent Tab, then the FORMS link. Please take the time to read through the handbook and go over it with your students. We have made changes from the 15-16 handbook and placed those changes in blue font.
Student Early Release Days or “SERD’s” will occur every Wednesday (except for the first day of school, the last Wednesday in December, and the last Wednesday of the school year). All AVUSD schools will dismiss students 80 minutes early. For Vanguard that means school will get out at 1:10 p.m. The teachers and staff will continue to remain on campus to partake in ongoing professional development.
Please make sure you arrive on time to pick up your students. The staff will not be responsible for watching students after school on these days.
COFFEE WITH THE PRINCIPAL
I will continue to host “Coffee with the Principal” this year. It will be held on the first Friday of the month (subject to change/cancellation). It begins at 8:15 in the MPR. This is a great opportunity to discuss current school and community issues that affect our students. Please check our school calendar for dates.
Please join me in welcoming the following new Falcons!
Ms. Brittney Ford--Kindergarten
Mr. Rick Russell--8th grade math
Mr. Brenda Ramirez--Counselor
PICK UP, DROP OFF, and VISITORS
DROP OFF--Please help keep your children safe by using the crosswalks and NOT crossing the street where there is no crossing guard. We have three designated crosswalks in the front of the school. We also ask all parents to please drive forward as far as they can when dropping off students. Pulling all of the way forward allows more cars behind you to enter the drop off zone.
PICK UP--While there are usually long lines waiting at the pickups when school gets out, the lines move fast and are typically gone 20 minutes after school ends. For SOUTH PICKUP FAMILIES you will notice the front curb has been painted white. We ask that families pull all the way forward when picking up their children so we can get the maximum number of cars loading. Please be respectful when picking your students up from school. Make sure you are here by 2:45. Families that are habitually late will be required to meet with administration to discuss their situations. Vanguard does host the Town of Apple Valley’s ASAP program. ASAP is an after school program that provides a place for students to wait for their parents, a place to work on homework, and supervised activities to keep them entertained. If you are interested, please pick up an application in the front office.
VISITORS--We have 20 minute parking for visitors in front of the school. This parking zone is easily identified by the green painted curb. Also, we have extended the disability parking zone. Please note that these parking areas are for families who need to visit the office/school for no more than 20 minutes!
Thank you and have a great 2016-17 school year!
